but when i drive down the road it will cause a smoke screen. any opinions. thanks

I still think intake milling/intake gasket sealing issue. Useing the tall front/rear gaskets can hold the intake up from a good side(s) seal. There was a prior similar thread & turned out to be valve/guide clearances were a mile off

Bumping this back up for discussion as it's time to tackle this issue before cruising season. Anyone have any feedback on my previous post regarding what to expect from a leakdown/compression test?

"My rules" for leakdown:

3% - typical rebuilt engine w/ rings seated
2% - excellent OEM
1% - Really good (Barton, etc.)
Anything between 3 and 10% - runs OK, giving up some power
Over 10% - break out the wrenches. Crop duster.

Sounds like you probably have a broke oil ring. That usually happens upon installation, not so much while "breaking in". I wouldn't be suprised if you pulled the heads and saw a groove in one or more cylinder.

When you installed the intake manifold did you cleanup all the old gasket etc/ While not disagrreeing with all thats been said I have found small blocks to love to draw oil in from the lifter valley. The gasket sets say never to use any sealer on the port sides. I ran into similar problem twice both times went and got the thickest intake gasket sets and used Indian head gasket shellac on the port sides. Went from oil smoke to zero. I have seen engines with broken rings not smoke that bad. Just my 10 cents
