OK....My question is: the ports on my weiand 5995 tunnel ram going on the 408 with J-Heads are mucho smaller then the head ports.....the J-Heads match the Felpro 1213 gasket perfect.

Should I leave the intake alone (ports are all within the head port perimeter) or should I port match them...????? Is having a smaller volume runner on the intake a plus...or will the step cause turbulence and kill power....?????

This is just a mild 450hp street combo....should I just bolt it together as is....??????

I`d be firing up the coffee pot and lubin up the cutters .........I like my intake ports slightly smaller than the heads or even if possible.

Why not try it as is?
If you dont like it you can carve later.
Usually match everything here but 2-4's and in you app, may be fine as is, may add torque.
Also like stacks, made buy who?

Yeah I was wondering if the narrower runners might add to bottom end torque which I sure would like as much as possible....??????

My engine builder said leave'em alone...

The stacks are K&N's....really nice pieces and run about $70 a piece.

I agree with your engine builder's suggestion to leave them alone.

If it were a case of the opposite with a cylinder head port that was smaller than the intake runner, then I would think you'd definitely have to do something. but not in this case. it might actually help ya.

That's what I thought with the smaller runners

Thanks, that saves me a ton of grinding

I do need to do a small amount of grinding to match-up the plenum top, but very minimal and will smooth out the casting seams and a few little slag here and there and shoot it out to be powder coated

I gotta say.... why have large port heads, and a tunnel ram if your looking for tourqe???
I would think the mixture coming in would have a ton of turbulence coming out of the manifold and into a big void of a port, with that 90* edge of manifold left.
It wont take long with a good carbide to at least blend it deep into the manifold for a smooth transition. keep in mind, your not going to open it up to and add a bunch of cc volume. I would just go for a smooth transition, as deep as you can reach.
Think of the air going over a box truck in the winter time, with all that snow swirling behind it....doesn't seem good for areo. nice looking setup though

Actually the smaller intake port acts as a reversion dam, especially on the bigger overlap cams with tight lobe centers Same thing on the exhaust, you always want a bigger exhaust flange port size and pipe size than the heads port size to help stop reversion on the overlap the box truck example does not have a bigger diameter pipe behind it to funnel the airflow through it Venturi effect proves that fluids funnel down into a smaller size increase speed, reduces pressure within the column so there is no bad results at all by having the smaller size intake runner on top of the head intake port, if within reason on the two sizes

Ok, I get the reversion dam at part throttle situation. But at WOT I dont think there would be a lot of reversion pulses to worry about (isnt this the ram tuning for certain rpm that mopar played with). Thats why I questioned the tunnel ram and search for more "tourqe" instead of peak #. you dont see max wedge heads using standard size manifolds. (I know that is an extreme example)
I would also be concerned that the mismatch isnt consistant on all runners, so if its good or bad it wont be the same every where for sure.

Unless this is a well scienced out combination, I don't see
much advantage in "port matching" here. You can't make an
OEM head too big for a 408" engine so, it's not like bolting a
Torker to a B-1 head. With properly tuned carburetors, tunnel
rams work better than most people think in street applications.
