I put in a 4 spd overdrive trans into my cuda today. It is a used unit and the owner said it was rebuilt by liberty gears and had about 500 miles on it. I have two questions.

1. He said that 3rd and 4rth are reversed and the shift rod had to be under the tab comeing out of the trans instead of above it. I could not see how to do this and just set it up normally. So I would shift 1st, 2nd, 4th, 3rd. How can I correct this? Does the rod need to be bent or something?

2. When driving there is a slight wur coming from the trans. I am too young to have seen these cars new and dont know if that is normal ot not. My friend said old trannies have strait cut gears and they tend to be a bit noisy, but I dont know if he knows what he is talking about.

you shift 1-2-3-4

no straight cut gears in a 833/OD trans. just reverse IIRC.

Here's how these things work, and WHY you turn the 3-4 shift lever is DOWN because that reverses the shift mechanism operation.

When you put the lever in "3rd" position, the reversed lever actually puts the transmission in the "old" "4th" gear (straight through) position, and when you put the lever in 4th, the reversed linkage actually puts the transmission in the old "3rd" gear position, which now is comprised of the overdrive ratio.

A little clue for ya. If you have any hard pulling or trailer towing, the "new" 3rd gear--the straight through gear--is much much stronger than the OD 4th gear.

I know you shift 1-2-3-4, lol. I guess I didnt word it right. My question is how can you reverse the 3-4 rod on an E body so I can shift in a normal pattern because it doesnt seem possible with out some sort of modification. Also there will be no towing in my Cuda.

all you have to do is flip the 3-4 lever upside down. it should fit in there.

I ran my ex's 74 B-cuda with an 833OD. There shouldn't be any interference with the crossmember. As mentioned, the rod may need to be a tad longer, though...

I am going to check today so I'll let you guys know.
