I've never shipped an engine overseas. I'm looking at selling my backup R5 and have some aussie inquiries. I would have to crate it up to go over seas. Can you guys give me some info on how to and maybe some pics?

Start will a pallet Jessy. This makes it easy for the shipping company's to move it with no problems.
I just used what ever I had laying around the barn and garage.
My dad own a saw mill and I used mostly hickory rough cut stuff, and used decking screws instead of nails.
Going over seas makes it prone to rust more so than anything else. So Spray it down with WD-40 if it was a bare block etc I would spray it down with WD-40 then slap some news paper over it, then bag it up with some good heavy duty trash bag liners.
I would also band it down good so it wont tip over no matter what, build it strong in case they decide to stack crap on top of it.
But I would write FRAGILE on the sides of it, along with ^^ THIS SIDE UP ^^ and DO NOT STACK..
Cause they will.

we shipped a engine to italy and it was cheaper then to ship to california i think it was 700 for ups 2 day air

Iv shipped a block from texas to Ha. i built a box made of plywood like in the photos.

It'll need to be built from heat treated wood or fumigated to clear Quarantine in Australia as well...not your issue of course, just something for the buyer to keep in mind.

I just finished loading 5 containers or could have helped get it to the Melbourne area for you at least.

If it's going by container, just shrink wrapped and crated up 'openly' is fine. Closing it completely in with plywood would be fine too, but it never matters to me personally.

If you were going to send it via air, not sure if they want it closed up or not..

I'm pretty sure it would be sent in a sea can. So it is better to use heat treated wood? I've never heard of this. Can you get it at any home depot or menards?

The engine is completely assembled and the block is painted. So would it need to be sprayed down with WD because of the sea salt or will it be fine?

Find a pallet to start with as a base perhaps, most of them are heat treated already (or fumigated,etc) Look for a stamp on them with a little tree shape and HT, etc on it.
Or just build it from scratch out of wood already done. Home Depot here orders it in for me (I use it in all my containers)
It used to be you could just leave the wood at the place you unloaded the containers in Oz, but Quarantine there is tightening down alot and they want it treated period pretty much now from what I've seen.

Again, you could just build the crate out of what ever you have around, and let the guy the other end sort it out. (it can be fumigated when it arrives in Oz)

If it was going into Melbourne...as I mentioned you just missed out on me loading a bunch of containers. Won't be doing more until mid-October is my next planned big batch of them. Sorry nothing going out sooner.

If I shipped it for you, I could handle all the wood stuff the Oz end, and you could build it out of what ever you had laying around.

Could be whom ever freights it can handle it this end as well (fumigation) but that would depend on how ever it went.

Aside from all that...just crating it solidly is all I would worry about. Oh, and being painted, there is not too much to worry about corrosion-wise. Brand new, and bare blocks tend to surface rust, along with some fresh machined steel surfaces (cranks,etc) But the time of year makes a difference along with just how much of an oil film on them from the factory.

Make sure you insure it for the full value. Have a friend that sent a vibration table overseas. Storm came up and threw a 600lb table off the deck supposedly. He was insured luckily.

Threw it off the deck ? Sounds odd to me. Everything that small would be inside of a container as far as I would be concerned..

Only stuff that goes RO/RO is very large machinery and vehicles..

Other option would be to find one of those plastic engine crates.. No issues at all then, plus nice and sturdy too.

I am not a fan of WD-40 for rust prevention.
I'd see about a plasic bag and a bunch of that dessicant.
There was a thread about a member down under that got a US engine with rust. He was not happy.
