I need to wire in a 140 or 160 amp alternator. Any suggestions for a factory vehicle that had the small alternator?

Choices I know of in that range are the 120 amp Denso unit used on later MOPAR's, a 140 amp GM case Powermaster, a souped up Denso from Powermaster at around 160 A and a big GM case Powermaster at 200 amps.

Some of these may fit factory "small alternator" brackets depending on what you are starting with. Engine size, AC or not and cylinder head brand/type can make a difference in what fits.

If you post more info that would help.

To get compact and the power you need I'd suggest one of the Denso's (either 120 A or the Powermaster high output version) or a high output small case Delco from Powermaster or another vendor. You can get used cores of both inexpensivly at a JY for fitup if needed.

I'm kinda of curious - what will need that much power?

Why.. Well The XFI fuel injection system suggested a 140 amp for a street strip car.

I guess it needs constant clean power.

And you never know, I may need a power antenna.

I'm running XFI also along with the usual MSD box and big electric fuel pump. I started with a small case Chrysler/Powermaster alternator after the 140A Powermaster/Delco was a "no fit" in stock w. AC brackets with Ed heads. The Chrysler based unit was rated 75A max, 50A idle. It wasn't enough. I had significant discharge at idle with lights on and it barely kept up running down the road at night with brights and AC.

With AC and the special brackets needed, upgrade options are limited. I finally went to the Chrysler 100A "big case" alternator and matching factory brackets. It has worked great. It provides full charge at idle even with everything running and no problem going down the road.

Bottom line, I think the 120A Denso unit would be more than enough. Plus its a fully deveoped OE alternator and should be more reliable - and less expensive - than the uprated versions. Mancini racing sells kits with this alternator with pics.
