I'm looking at an otherwise clean roadrunner to buy, that has rust in the torsion bar mount underneath the driver's side floor pan. The driver's side front floor also needs replacing obviously. I'm guessing water sat in this spot for a long time. Other than that, the car is 99% rust free.

I'm just concerned that to repair the torsion bar mount the entire thing would need to be removed and replaced?

they make caps, us tool or something like that.
but if it was bad enough to rust that out, I would probably walk away. There is probably more rust hiding. Or you better be getting it at a really good discount.

Depending on your fabrication and welding skills, I would replace the torsion bar crossmember. Any 66-70 B 2 door, 4 door or wagon should work. I actually HAVE an entire front stub from the radiator yoke to the door frame of a 70 Satellite. A friend cut up a 4 door a few years ago and gave it to me. Theres a bunch of spotwelds and seam sealer, but how many of these Road Runners are left to buy? Sure, they made plenty, but there aren't nearly as many around as before. Dont let a little rust scare you away. Its becoming ALL that we have left!

Yes it can be fixed but pass unless it's a good deal. There will be 5x more rust than what is visible once you start tearing into it.

you can replace part of the T-bar crossmember. since you'll be replacing part of the floor that should make it easier.

Auto Rust Technicians sells the repair parts for the T bar mount. Its not a real hard repair.

If the rust is really a localized issue for some reason and most of the rest of the car is OK then it may be a good deal. Check out the rest carefully!

If going with a full front floor replacement, then swapping out torsion bar cross member is fairly easy. It is possible that there will be other rust, so look carefully.

With both the tortion bar and transmission mount stresses put upon it I would not touch a A.R.T. cap for a T-bar crossmember. Do it right and replace it with a good used factory piece.

I believe the ART parts can be used as caps or complete replacements after removing the original. For complete replacement, the actual T bar mounts would be removed from the original and welded into the ART piece. From memory they ara as thick as or thicker than original. It would be worth a call to them to double check.

if it is a 70 B ART doesnt even make a full T bar crossmember, only the horizontal side pieces with NO tabs to attach it to the rocker or flanges to attach the floor pan to. And they are called SAFE-T-CAPS for a reason, they are frame caps not replacement parts.
Even if they did make a full piece why would anyone in their right mind replace the whole thing with a bent steel cap for more money ($249+s&h for the 2 pieces they do make) than a factory original stamped steel replacement could be had for?

yeah, that looks real sturdy

.

Not necessarily, not in this side of the country.

I'm pretty sure AMD now makes the torsion bar crossmember.

My car has both sides capped. Depending on the car, "hidden rust" may or may not be found or exist. My car is puzzling as it has all original body panels and floors/trunk. Solid as a rock but both torsion supports were capped. It doesn't bother Me at all. (they were done very nicely)
