In my small block Dart Sport I am running 5.13 gears and a 33" tall tire. It rpms pretty quick in the 1/8th mile and haven't had it run in the 1/4 with the new 422" motor yet. I was kind of thinking about less gear and less tire to reduce mass. Have any of you guys ever switched to less gear and went faster/quicker? Thinking of 4.88's or 4.56's. Normal footbraking e.t.'s are 6.20's at 108mph at 2930lbs.

Thats probably a good gear for the 1/8 but its too steep for the 1/4 with a 422".... try the 4.56... you should have enough torque to pull it

I had a 2,800lb Challenger with a ported W-2 360/727. 5.13 and 32" tall tires - 10.22@130+ and forgot if it was 6.40's or 6.50's that I touched a couple of times. 1.37 best 60' footbraking also. It was all the gear it could handle. So 4.56 or 4.88 should work better with your stroker. Also found out that shifting at 7,100 and 6,800 didn't seem to make any difference, so I shifted lower.

Thanks for the info guys. I only run 4.30's in the Challenger but with a big block it has no problem with torque and is much heavier. I think a 4.88 or 4.56 would pick up my mph and help with hot tracks. Just one more thing on my to do list. So good brakes and less gears are on the list.

I think it just comes down to the specific combo…FWIW, when I switched from 3:55’s to 4.10’s my car picked up half a second, but that was with a somewhat mild 360 in my 3250lbs car.

You want to be fast, you need wheelspeed, not rpm. A steep gear is usually a lot of noise from engine rpm, but the car is going nowhere. Monte did you ever see a super stock car all of them has steep gears?

SS,stock and other class cars that are held to limits and specs need to use every way possible to gain every minute advantage and max output. A car with unlimited combos, weight, cubic inches, power adders, with no restrictions are more likely to benifit from less gear. Most bracket cars fall in this catagory(less gear). They would never last winging them with deep gears, where as a class car doesn't have to run hundereds of rounds each season and are heavely maintained after only a few runs.

As BG said, this is not a stocker, super stocker, pro stocker, or comp car, that has a tiny power window and are trying to ring every ounce out of it. You can't compare class cars with bracket racers. In stock, you have stock bore/stroke motors, with factory heads and carbs running 9s, in heavy cars on a small tire. Most average bracket cars with 500in motors, big tires and link suspensions are lucky to do that and most will be as quick or quicker, with less gear. Its more about the torque converter than anything.

X2 Class cars also rely on dead hook which terminates HP and torque,a bracket or quick car likes a little wheelspin and it is controled by proper use of torque application in various methods:gears, converters, launch controls and etc. It's been proven over and over less gear=more MPH=better ET in most cases.Case in point my car started with 5.13 and picked up going to 4.88,in the quest to lessen the RPM at the stripe we switched to 4.56 and the car picked up even more. With the over abundence of HP and torque the Hemi makes we may consider 4.30s.We did this in Ron McCellands Hemi and he dropped from 9.60s to 9.50 with the gear being the only change.

Jake, sure wish I had that car back. Hell I wish I had the time and money to race at all.
