Will a set of 915 heads from a 340 fit on a 318? If so, which cam would be the best one to use for street performance? The 318 is a 4-barrel auto. Thanks

yes they will

i run a lunati 60710 VooDoo roller cam in my 360 headed 318 in my daily driver truck

258/264
207/213
.485/.485

the whiplash from hughes is a nice one with a lumpy lump lump idle to it also

any of the lunati sb cams can use the comp 901-16 springs...drop on with stock seals

FYI...lunati springs are doubles and need pc seals and machine work to go on a stock sb head

it'll kill compression, hurting low end torque. compression will be in the 7's, unless you mill a fair amount.

the comp 901 springs will work with any cam up to about .495 lift.

cam, with the low compression, biggest I'd go would be a comp XE256 or lunati voodoo 60401 unless you are doing a piston upgrade or heavy milling.

a better head choice for a stock short block 318 are magnums. they outflow the 915's with smaller ports (better velocity=better midrange throttle response and torque), and have ~9cc smaller chambers than the 915's, (63cc vs 72) so you'll actually get a slight compression boost over even stock open chambered 318 heads (~68cc)...you just need to run hollow pushrods that are ~7.625" long and stock magnum rockers, and either redrill the heads for LA intakes or run a magnum intake.

hughes sells their "Iron Rams" (enginequest 318A/B magnum replacement heads) complete with their #1110 springs for $725...I'd probably run a voodoo 60402, comp XE256 or XE262, or engle 4418.

he said 318 4-v

that will allready be low on comp with 360 heads

so i would not think it will drop any more than it allready is with 915s

What about using the hi-swirl LA heads from '87-'93? The 360 heads would have larger valves than the 318 heads. I had a set of 318 heads installed with 2.02/1.80 valves and it's running great. A poor mans version of the Edelbrock heads.

I missed him say it was a stock 4v...that said, power and flow wise, he won't really gain anything power wise using some 915 heads over the stock smogger 360 heads a 4v 318 came with....not worth the cost or hassle at least, unless the heads that are on there are totally wiped....that money would be better spent on some KB167 pistons...

same thing with using 308's...really no flow improvement over smogger non swirl 360's (except in the magnum style exhaust port), but still has the huge, compression killing chambers.

after putting magnums on my stock long block '86 318 with a reground roller cam, I can't imagine a better OEM head for this displacement engine....

I like the #302 cast swirl port heads with 1.88/1.60 valves with a home pocket port also

I like them on a stock 360 bottom end also for a truck/work engine...lot more torque

with patrick, spend the $ on pistons unless the heads are shot completly

my 360 headed 318 works nice in the 85 truck with the lunati roller cam for a driver,I followed patricks advice on that one and it works great for mine with the low CR

Magnum heads from hughes are a nice deal hp per dollar.

This is what my 323" heads are. 596? series 1969 318 heads sent from Aerohead $399 pair. Resized with 1.88/1.60" valves. Intake pocket hump was ground down , and some minor clean up, that was the extent of the porting. 76 cc chambered head was milled .060" to about 64cc. That puts me somewhere around 8.8:1 real compression. Awesome for 87 octane cruising power and mileage mix.

The 323 is armed witha 340 hp factory cam .430/.444", on the stock adjustable roller shaft valvetrain.

Exhales with summit headers, the Edelbrock streetmaster 318 intake is a unusual charateristic single plane with operating band best 1000-4800rpm, and a Holley 600 vac sec.
