i have been told that a 742 sure grip unit will fit/work in a 489 case without any mods - is this true? Has anybody done the swap? I have a 489 case with the gear ratio i want and a 742 with a good sure grip unit. if this is a workable option that would be great!

Sure grip don't care. Just use the side bearings for the sure grip unit. The outer race outer diameters are the same case for case it is the inner diameter of the cone that is different.
