buddy of mine has a 4640 AVS and i think its got the bigger primarys on it. is this swap worth the cost of the carb and rebuild? the 383 is stock with slight manifold plenum and gasket match, 1/2 4-hole spacer, 915 close chamber heads stock valves, 9.75 cr, stock bottom end, small vodoo cam 220/226 @.050, stock HP exh manifolds with 2.5" x pipe exhaust, 3.23 gear, 4-speed. in a RR. the car does seem to run out of breath over 5,400 rpm. Is this carb the 750 cfm large primary carb? whats a fair price for one. Thanks

I think a 750DP would work like a MoFo on your application. Is the 440 AVS 750?

hi
yes using the larger avs would be a nice upgrade for you and give a stock appearance , sooo if it is cost effictive give it a go .

Did you really think Mr. Yuck could enter a conversation about AVS without bringing 750DP into the conversation?

Short answer, yes it should be worth your trouble to upgrade. Just be sure the primaries are the larger size, not all 440's got the large version.

Price could be the issue. There will be guys restoring HP 440's that want/need this carb and are willing to pay for it. That would be harder for you to get a low price.

The 440 oe avs's aren't 750 cfm and all of them (oe avs's) are emission carbs w late 60's early 70's technology (4 decades old) and you can measure the rods/jets and get an eddy strip kit w similar size rods/jets and use flat AFB/eddy metering rod covers to play w the main metering. On a recent thread a guy said Sorensen AFB kits are $18.99 which is cheap so an oe AVS kit may be similarly priced. As said if the primaries are larger it'd for sure run harder but I'd much rather have a 66-67 large oe AFB or an eddy but if the price plus the kit and your time to rebuild it makes it worthwhile then yes I'd do it. EDIT I have an OE AFB you can have for $29

I got almost an identical setup as you, car and all.

My 383 is a OEM build HP that has some bolt ons. It had a 750 Eddy on it. It certainly had more zip higher in the range with the 750. Of course that model carb is junk overall, so it had to go.

I put an AVS off a 440 on it. Too bad it is the small version, but it happens to be the same size as the 383 got, so it isn;t all that bad.

It is for sure choked up now. I can't wait to get a bigger carb on it.

I want my fair share

Not to get off topic but what paint did he use on that engine? It looks WAY closer than the crap Mopar Performance is peddling.

it is the Bill Hersch paint, the original paint i covered was just a tad lighter but not as light as most of the other engines i see painted at shows which acording to my original paint is too light and too blueish.

On another off-topic topic, I noticed that you are running a Lunati 60302 cam. I'm doing a similar 383 build and would be interested in your thoughts on using that cam.

Are you real happy with it? What kind of vacuum do you have a idle? Does exhaust note have any chop to it or is it real smooth?

Mine will be going into e-body with 4 speed and 3.91 gears. Have been sitting on the fence between 60302, 60303 and Comp XE268.

I run a '70 Barracuda close to your specs (although my compression is lower) that will do slightly quicker quarters with the smaller 383 carb than it will with the bigger 440 carb. The engine will fall flat (in warm air) with either carb at about 5500 so I think the manifold is the restriction rather than the carb.

Both carbs were tested with many combos of rods, jets, squirters & air door settings using LM2, widband O2 sensors as well as 1/4 mile times & trap speeds.

I do use a snubstack it is a K7N 85-0700 for Edelbrock & Carter square-bore carbs. They are made for the new Carters (Edelbrock 1400 1404 1405 1406 1407 1411) not the old AVS, it is not a simple task but they can be made to fit quite neatly with some work.

hey I like the AVS fine. And it will be an upgrade, but the holley will run better. Is a 440 AVS 750? I thought they were smaller. Shoot I loved the old Thermoquad I had in a 440 charger until my bro flood it and BOOM tried to catch my car on fire. Never worked right after that.

There was an article a few years ago in one of the mopar magazines where they were playing around with a 340 and they tried an AVS from a HP 440 and it picked up accross the board on the dyno so I would have a hard time beleiving a 383 would not see a nice gain too. The basic 440, 340 and 383 AVS were all the same size while the 440 HP AVS was bigger. As a side note I had a 440 HP AVS on my mild 318 for a while and it ran just fine.

The 4640SA - Primary Throttle Plates 1 11/16"
Secondary Throttle Plates 1 11/16"

So in theory 750cfm

The 625cfm carbs run a 1 7/16" Primary Throttle Plate

I tried a 440 carb on my 340 Duster and around town it was a dog down low. I never tried it at the track.I know it wasn't the question but I thought I would throw it out there anyway

Common mod on 383s back in the day, did it to a couple of mine, picked up some power while retaining stock appearance. I think the actual CFM increase is around 40CFM but I don't recall exactly. We'd pick up quite a bit with stock-looking stuff, between some porting & bowl work, recurve, exhaust and some gear & chassis tuning.
