I have come across a "67" 440 that has some mixed parts. The Dampener is for a forged internal balance engine as it should be in "67" but the flywheel is the externally balanced item used with the "70" and up 6pk style rods. My first thought is to put a neutral balance flywheel on it but who knows maybe the rotating assembly is from a later engine and the balancer is the part that is wrong. So, do I have to pull the pan to know for sure or is there a dead giveaway in the shape of the crank flange perhaps?

Thanks

There is no difference in the appearance of the forged 6-bolt cranks so you have to pull the pan.

IS the crank drilled for a pilot bearing? IF its not drilled it could be a cast crank also, which is exterally balanced too.

what he said .

the flywheel is probably because someone didn't know better , i had an external balance flywheel on my 383 dart because the previous owner had a clutch job done and whoever did it didn't want to wait to have the original wheel cut and just used another .

That's exactly what I think happened because it is a 67 block with 915 heads in a 70 ebody. The flywheel is correct for the car but the engine is not. I have a new 130 tooth neutral balance flywheel that I plan on putting on it but I couldn't remember whether there was an easy way to tell about the crank for sure. Apparently not. I also have an old Moroso oilpan. Maybe this would be a good time to swap it on as well so that I can check the internals.

Thanks all

Yea, I haven't even looked yet but I know what I am going to see. That's the reason I didn't put it on a long time ago. I wish the Ebody hemi pan wasn't made out of gold. Over $200 for a repro pan and pickup seems a bit excessive when they sell the cheap (chinese?)deep pans for less than $50. I would even buy a well used pan if I could find one. I don't need perfect, just functional.
