My front pads have about 70% left. The rotors are too thin to turn, and I have a slight pulsation when braking. I don't want to waste money on new pads, but I don't recall that I've ever done new rotors without doing pads at the same time. While I know it's possible, I wanted to know what you guys think. Good idea? Bad idea? Why?

personnely, after money on rotors,i'd spring for new pads, since you are already there,i'd hate to put it all back and still feel the pads cause a pulsing

The pads are worn to whatever the rotor surface looks like now so they will not work as well as a fresh set of pads , change the pads tightwad.

LOL so true...my cheapness is legendary. Matter of fact, I'm wearing work pants that I bought at the thrift store for $1.00...they're nice Dockers, too.

Because I just bought the car off my dad a year ago, so previous maintenence decisions were his, not mine.

Keep the pads, get yourself another pair of work pants. The pads will wear to the rotors, true and the pads will wear to these rotors too. theyll "seat" within a few miles. If you want to scuff them up, hit em with a wire brush. The pulsation is in the warped rotor. Pads are not going to cause pulsation. That's my 1702 cents.

If you insist on the old pads, just scuff them on some slightly rough concrete, or coarse sanpaper, install them, they will seat just fine.

I guess I'll have to remember that the next time I'm looking for brake pads at the junk yard...

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I bet you could outfit all the vehicles listed in your signature with new brake pads for $100. Keep in mind for that price you'd have to install them yourself, so it might risk staining those pants.

Rock Auto or places like AutoZone sell pads for next to nothing. Try checking there.

then spend the money you saved on the pants and buy a new set of $15 pads you cheapskate

seriously, if you plan on putting the miles on the car why not save yourself the troube of replacing them now and get 50% more miles before you have to replace them again

My pants get stained and ripped at work all of the time when I'm disassembling cars, which is why I buy thrift store pants.

And the CJ and the Z both have 4 wheel discs, so it might cost $140 to outfit them.

Resurfaced 4 rotors on my brothers daytona and I just sanded down all 4 pads until they were flat. Rotors were in bad shape but cleaned up, pads had 90% meat left so I was not about to toss them. I just wore a mask when I did the sanding(did not take long at all) then cleaned em up with brake cleaner and was good to go.

sad to say, out of all the new parts that i put my rotissoree-job 70 challenger, the front brake pads are used! However, I rarely wear pants when working on my cars. I work more efficiently with a little breeze.

Back to the cheapskate O.P...

Another vote for making sure the used pads have a clean, flat surface and re-using them.

Down to just a blue car now.

If they were a good pad to begin with, there's no reason not to reuse them.

Just scuff them on sandpaper, till they are flat. Very common practice in the trade.

reuse em and you might put a steel scale on them & check for flatness in a matter of seconds. You'll press the pistons back & if that causes no prob then I'd opinionate that you are good.

Once when I was anxious to get a car back on the road, I did the following: Both rotors were grooved beyond repair, but the used pads were only worn about 50 % at the deepest groove. NO I didn't have any warranty on the pads. I replaced the rotors with some from another car. I took a 9' sanding block and proceeded to "block sand" the pads until they were flat. It sounds really cheesy, but it worked. Of course I tested them out on the back forty before hitting the streets.
