Just ordered a new Star vacuum pump and wondering where you guys mount your fittings on the valve cover? Cheers, Arnie

Me, I'd put it towards the front of the motor, opposite bank as the breather, to get some crossflow, and a baffleplate inside of the valvecover to dampen the direct pull of windage near it. If you're running a breather on each valvecover, I'd try to put a vacuum pump fitting at the opposite end of each valve cover.

IMO you are gonna need to install it in the center of the valve cover toward the intake. Use the Star baffle and put it dead center on the center rocker hold down. Trust me we tried it a few places and this was the best location that picked up the least oil. You can see mine on the drivers side cover, as well as the other places we have tried here.

Target the rocker hold-down area...mimic the factory breather location.
This is pretty much the way I do it... over top of the wide rocker shaft hold down towards the front of the cover... that area gets the least amount of oil

Ari440, How much oil do you get in the puke tank after a run with the fitting on top?
I have a baffle under the breather hole in the same location as Ari on my Indy valve covers, so I will try that first before drilling new holes...
Thanks,
Arnie

FWIW I get maybe a 1/2 ounce per pass of milky mix.

Hi Edge, I pick up the Star vacuum pump kit on May 27th and will install that weekend to be ready to rock the first weekend in June!!! That is if I get the motor in and everything else hooked up by then. I made 900HP after all but it needed the vacuum pump to seal the rings... I am going to try it like Ari has it and see what happens. Cheers, Arnie

well I need to try a different pick up location, as it is pulling 10 ounces out in a 1/4 pass and the Moroso puke tank is blowing oil out the breather making a mess... Going to try it in the front face of the VC like Woody has his. My Injected methanol motor is making some serious power, but the oil hassle needs to go!!! Any other ideas?

Thanks WESW,
I notice you have it closer to the intake on the front of the Valve Cover, than the exhaust. Any logic to that?
I have the Star fitting that is open on one side only. I am assuming it should face down for the opening??
Thanks,
Arnie

where you guys mount your fittings is less important than how effective the baffle is. It must completely obscure (mask) the opening from line-of-sight, and not drain into the aperture path. If there's room, a labyrinth is better.

I am pulling vacuum from a moroso breather AND I have a full size baffle under it as well. I hope this works (I think it will).

I am running individual shaft mount Jesel Pro rockers with pushrod oiling, so maybe thats why the top of the vc is not working for me?
If the Star pump does not pull vacuum with oil in it, then why does mine continue to pull oil into the tank every run?
Please educate me as this is driving me nuts cleaning oil off the motor every pass...
Thanks,
Arnie

are you using the Star tank?
and Star fitting ?
if not the pump is not being used properly. STAR does not even stand behind the pump when used witout the cannister. That pump is to be run dry and not see any oil at all. the baffle placement is your problem
Quote:
*Oil in the Pump: The Pump is a “OIL-LESS” design, which requires NO LUBRICATION for operation. Oil in the Pump will not damage the Pump, however it will reduce its performance. The dryer you can keep this Pump, the better it will work! The use of a baffle is mandatory! This may require several modifications to the location and design of the baffle you draw vacuum from. How will you know if oil is in the pump? If you use clear hose and the hose shows signs of oil in it, the oil will be in the Pump also. If you remove the belt from the Pump and spin it by hand and you do not hear the vanes tapping (as they are flung from the rotor) you have oil in the Pump. To clean the oil from the Pump, remove the hose from the intake side of the Pump and spray nonflammable (environmentally safe) solvent into the intake tube with the engine running. Mind the Pump exhaust when doing this! You should make this part of your usual race car maintenance. Excessive oil in the pump is usually a clear indication of a failed seal or gasket. STAR Machine has a tank available that combines an oil separator/filter and an exhaust tank in one unit, Part #02.09.000. STAR Machine will warranty this Pump for one year only when used in conjunction with this tank.

Take this advice....avoid the Moroso breather tank at all costs...that thing will see more puke than a 17 year old keg party LOL..

Hey Fred,
Yes to the Star fitting, No to the Star tank...
It is not a money thing, it is just that I was told the Star tank did not work well with Alum block, big cube Methanol injected motors.
Seems like the moroso tank does not have many fans either, but I will just have to try a different pick up spot.
Thanks,
Arnie
