Heres what I got:

440
steel crank
KB237
Zero deck
Stock rods w/ARP
balanced
Crane 528/552- 242@50 Hyd #H-242/3520-2-8
iron adjustables 1.5
RPM intake

My problem is I have this short block with .040 MLS and 915 heads in mind.Turns out one of the 915s is unusable.

I have a set of 452s that are fresh and ready to go.

My question is can I go with a steel shim and the 452s and maybe a little mill work and be OK as far as quench? If not do you guys have any recomendations?

3500lbs Dart post,TTIs,3200 Fairbanks vert,3.91 gears,750 DP and MSD.
Thanks!

915 and 452 have a totally different chamber design. With a 915 you build for quench with a flat top piston, with a 452 you need a domed piston to build for quench. Your combo will run fine with the 452, it just won't have quench.

the open part of the chamber on a 452 will not be the same from chamber to chamber , to get quench with them and the piston you have ,of course this is ASSuMEing that your piston is at ZERO deck , you would need to cut at least .100 off the head and use a steel shim gasket . Of course cutting that much off the head will create a new set of problems, like much higher compression ratio and possible piston to valve clearance .

find another 915 or just put on the 452's and cross your fingers ...

Yes I know the quench wont be ideal. It is zero deck.

I was considering milling to 83 CC and steel shim gasket. I'd like to keep the CR 10 to 10.5 if I can. If I have to mix my fuel a little I'm good with that.I believe the 915s would put me above that even with a .040 gasket?

That's too much compression for pump gas, PLAN on mixing and probably more than just a LITTLE .

So I think 452 with no milling and steel shim be my best option.

Thanks

I would use the 452 with a .040 gasket will give you 10 to 1 roughly so on the edge for 93 with that cam.

you'll be fine with the 452's. Many of us if not all tossed engines together with no requard for quench and they ran fine. BTW what is quench anyway? Fancy talk. put it together and lay the hammer down.

452's flow well and have hardened seats but can be crack prone but if yours are fresh/checked out you are past that. As said you'll lose your good quench (I'm a firm believer in it) and lower the CR. Might see if you can locate another 915 as recently on here there was a single for sale and there were 2 more singles in the last ~ several months or so. EDIT they were cheap as singles tend to be

You need to have a block that has the cooling holes to get the benifit of the revised cooling passages and I'm pretty sure not all 452's have the passages, only those that have the 5/8 hex peanut plugs.

Well the book says 11.5 with a closed chamber heads and an .040 gasket(I assume)so thats too much for 91 octane(all we got here)and although I dont mind mixing a little I dont think I can get away with it.There is always a thicker head gasket I suppose. With the 452s it's more like 9.7.

Both sets of heads I have are 2.08/1.74 and the cam is not all that big so I dont think it will make that much difference anyway? It's gonna get driven often so do you think the extra compression is worth it?

Motor is going together one way or the other this weekend but I did find another 915 local.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I have indeed been down that road. I once put J heads on the 273 in my 67 Barracuda thinking I was doin a good thing.....OOPS
