I'm going to be getting some new rims and tires for a 1974 Duster with a stock suspension. The 245/60/14 tires I have on the back now look too small and barely fill in the wheelwell, so I am thinking of going to a 255/60/15 on the back and a 225/70/15 tire on the front. Is anyone running this combination on a stock Duster? Will I have any clearance issue in either front or back? For rims, I am planning to get 15x8 with a 4.5" backspace on the rear, and 15x7 with a 3.75 backspace on the front.

""265/60/15 on the back""

May I ask what brand makes this size? When I was looking a couple of years ago I could not find this size, so I ended up with 255/60/15's on back.

Thanks

My mistake, I meant 255/60/15 on the back. I edited my post. I am going with BF Goodrich tires and they only offer the 255/60/15 and the 275/60/15.

that sounds aweful tall on the front for a duster. my duster with 14x5.5" rallyes only has room for 205-215/70R14 tires up front before you'd have to start trimming the front edge of the wheel opening. a 225/70R15 will be another 1.25" taller....I'd probably look at 225/60R15's for the front.

I agree too tall. 225/60/15 will be close. Close will vary close depending on alignment, past collision damage and bodywork to fenders. Turn the tire so the edge is closest to the front fender bottom lip. Then back up down a driveway with the tire in that closest position while someone watches for clearance.

I really do not think 225/60/15 will work with 3.75 backspace 15x7 rims.. You need to run a 15x7 4.25 to 4.5 backspace rim. You could give 4.0 backspacing a try, but don't get your hopes up unless you want to lip back 1/2" of the bottom front edge of the fender lip. OR see if you could push out the fender with the bottom fender stabilizer bar a bunch (drill new hole in fender).

Thanks for the replies.

Maybe I'll just stick with a 215/60/15 tire on a 15x7 rim for the front. It's really the back that needs more wheel and tire in the well to fill it out. I just don't want to end up with a huge difference between front and rear tire sizes that won't look right or handle well. That was my only reason for considering upping the front tire size from what I currently have.

My stock wheelwell 74 FRANKENDUSTER has 235 60 15 BF Goodrich tires on stock 15x6.5 ralley wheels up front. They fit fine. The rear? 255 60 15 tires on widened 15" wheels from Wheel Vintiques.

I think 15x6.5 rallyes are 4.25 backspacing. The original poster has 15x7 with 3.75 backspacing.

..i have 215/70r14 on the front and 225/70r15 on the rear.
the 225's on the rear fit nice and do not stick outside the body lines and looks stock.
i have seen lots of dusters with 275/60r15 on the rear and they stick out to far for my taste but sure give the car some attitude...

there is no perfect canoe!

"Sticking out too far" Is a term relative to the offset or backspacing of the RIM and has little to do with the tire. A 15x5 inch wheel with 4 1/2 inches of backspacing will "Stick out too far".

I've heard a few people say that they were able to fit a 275/60/15 tire on the rear of a stock suspension Duster with either a 15x8 rim with 4.5 inches of backspace, or a 15x10 rim with 4.75 inches of backspace. Does anyone have experience with a 275 tire on the rear of a Duster. Pictures of these tire/wheel combos on Dusters would be greatly appreciated as well.

Hey Keith,
I'm running almost exactly what you're planning on installing. I have a set of 15x8 Jeg's Sport Drag rims with 255/60-15 tires, and this combo would work best for a stock rear suspension A body. These back rims have 4-1/2" backspacing. The fronts are the same brand rim, but are 15x7, with 4" back spacing. The largest front tire you can use w/o rubbing or hitting something are 215/70-15's (which is what I'm using after some experimentation). KK

I have a set of 275/60 R15 BFG Radial T/As on the back of my '74 Duster. I know they are 15 x 8's but I dont know the back spacing off the top of my head. I have 3" over arched springs though.

Thanks for the picture.
Those tires fill the rear out nicely, but my Duster doesn't sit quite as high so I think they would be a little tight.

..wouldn't a 5" rim with 4.5" backspace sit deeper rather than stick out?
275r6015 is pretty wide.
i still think it might be hard to get it to sit inside the rocker like stock regardless of backspace, but i've been wrong before.
.not everybody likes there car to appear stock.
