I would have voted for a CRD out of a Liberty or a TDI from a VW. Diesel Power!

My brother in law has a 62 Valiant and we've been going back and forth on what powerplant to put in it. Just to put an LA318 requires ditching the heaterbox and other cutting. It finally came to me last night. A 3.9 V6 5spd from a Dakota. Most likely a magnum. What has to be taken from the doner vehicle and how hard would it be to wire it to the car if we can find a doner cheap enough. Thanks
Whats wrong with another slant 6? You can get some pretty good kick out of them with a little work, and even upgraded would likely be cheaper when your all done then a 3.9 swap will be.
To put a 3.9 in there, you will need at least, the motor, trans, wiring, computer, fuel tank (or at least the proper pressure pump), motor mounts, exhaust, and probably a rad. Then, the exhaust manifolds might not fit in the car (they are rear dump), the steering column may not clear the motor, and you will likely have to modify the firewall and trans mount areas. I suspect the 5 speed shifter is going to be in the dash as well, they are built into the top of the trans (like a granny gear 4 speed). A 3.9 motor mounts are at the center of the block and the 225 are more towards the front, I have to wonder what your going to have to do with the K member. A 3.9 is as wide as a la 318, and only 4" shorter. Do some measuring. Gene

Not trying to argue, but after you dress up the 225, you will have a respectable motor that bolts into your car. When you spend the same money on the 3.9, you still have to make it fit in the car. Just saying.... Wonder what the power numbers look like between the dressed up /6 and the box stock mag 3.9? Us Mopar guys never were much worried about doing things the simple way, it was always the final outcome we were concerned about. Swap in the 3.9, take a bunch of pictures, write up the "how to" and show us the track results. We are all waiting. Gene

Im not trying to argue either. Car dont belong to me, its my brother in laws and he is 17 and dont make squat. With the slant six introduced in 1960 in two versions, a 101 hp, 170 cu.in and a 145hp, 225 cu. in. version, the slant six built its reputation for performance and reliability. Hyper-Pak specs: •Overhead valve. Cast iron block. •Compression ratio: 11.5:1 (225), 10.5:1 (170) •Brake hp: 195 at 5200 rpm (225), 148 (170) The Magnum versions, with multiple-port injection, were rated at 180 hp. Torque jumped from 195 to 220 lb-ft as well You can get a bigger trottle body and injectors but Im sure he can find a Dakota for Under $600 and the weight difference is Valiant 2750# and a regular cab shortbed Dakota is 3042#. Wich would improve milage imo. He might not ever do it so dont plan on a build post.Plus he dont have the skills needed but I think I might If he does go through with it Ill deff post about it.

you will need t ofind a v 8 center link for the 62,,,or the 3.9 will sit up kinda high to clear the center link,,,you can find them on e bay or another mopar site some times that deals with those early A bodies called for A-bodies only,
the dropped center link would fit 1964 65 66 only, valiant, dart, barracuda only,,,
the 1987 dakotas had 3.9 with a carb,,would be much easier then all the computer crap,,,i knew of a guy when i lived in ill he lived in the joliet area had a 1962 lancer or valiant??? with a 340 that was back in the early 1980s it can be done

The oil pump is the same. The truck pan is a rear sump. You may be able to mount the 3.9 far enough forward to only need a notch in the back of the pan to clear the centerlink.
have pondered this swap for my 65 Cuda. If you mount the 3.9 as far forward as you can that opens up more real estate under the floor pan for the 4sp auto most of them are hooked to. Early A's require severe butchery to put a 4sp auto into one. Moving the V6 forwar as much as possible will not only give you more distributor to firewall clearance (62 A will need that) but it will remove most of the trans to tunnel interference issues.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

I think he needs to get his life in order before tackling any project.
He could buy a cheap transport device for less than either project.

Or it can be a great learning experience... Just saying. So long as someone is willing to help fund the project.
I knew a kid in high school who had his dad restore his 66 Mustang Conv. Basically whatever he payed for the car, his parents would match it. I think it's done being restored but I think he should have pulled a wrench or two. And it looks like such a girl's car. Not masculine at all.

Forget the heater, you can get universal units to replace it.
Then you can put whatever you want in it.
I'd ditch the 3.9 liter engine idea, that's about the most craptastic engine you could pick. Seriously. They are still dog slow and the mileage sucks. It may look good on paper but they just plain suck. Even Poly 318s make fun of the 3.9.
I'd go 360 or 440.
i had a 3.9 in dakota carb, not injected, 5 speed was pretty pepppy,,,,not sure if mopar still makes a 4 bbl intake for a 3.9
