How many splines does my 742 casting 8 3/4 axles have ? I want to install a spool...the cone type diff I have is not locking the 2 wheels on the pavement for drag

It's not normally recommended to use a regular spool with OEM axles, especially on the street. If it rains, you may want to idle home, or walk. The added stress of turns can encourage twist and breakage. I have seen some 11 second drag cars use OEM axles with a spool for a while, but I don't think it's a good idea. When a spooled axle does break, particularly at the track, the car can make a hard left or right!

Replacement sure-grips and lockers for the street are more expensive, but safer.

If you plan on going faster in the future, you can beef up the rear with aftermarket 35 spline axles and spool.
