Who here has used VHT high temp paint on headers? How long has the paint lasted and does it bubble , or flake off

I used it. Had an old set of headers blasted and then used their primer and paint. It was on the 72 that only sees track time but it held up ok for a while. Then it started to show rust through the paint. Pretty much like any other paint I've tried.

I would think el cheepo BBQ paint would work as good.

That said, member PROSPORT has his headers painted W/ an Eastwood Co high heat silver and he's been real happy with how they've held up.

Haven't used that, but have used rustoleum BBQ paint (silver), it's cheap, available everywhere, and plain works!

Needs sandblasting to prep. Goes on like water. Scratches easily till its cured. Doesn't last.

Mine started rusting through the vht paint within a month of use. Will try something else next time.

I agree for the most part. The headers on my wife's Barracuda looked good for 3 years using VHT ceramic black paint. With that said, it's just a fair weather cruiser. If we drove it every day, the paint would have gone south much faster.

I had the headers ceramic coated black by a local company over the winter. We'll see how they last this time around.

Pretty much crap. It came right off in a blaze of smoking glory. Don't waste your time.

I have had good luck with vht so far. My car only has only about 100 miles on it. I guess time will tell.

For success, one must:

1) Sandblast - and wear rubber gloves so your skin oil does not contaminate the clean metal

2) Wipe down w/ acetone - to get and grease or oil out if there...

3)Spray two coats VHT - more will cause blistering.

4) Ona cookie sheet, "bake" your painted headers up to 450 degrees temp in you kitchen oven ( hint: make sure wife is gone for the day).

5) bolt up and enjoy.

I guess if you have an oven big enough for headers, you can go into business baking Pizzas!
I have had crappy luck with all the spray on stuff. The only proven remedies that will stand up to the rigors of full throttle runs and bumper to bumper traffic include Ceramic coating and Ceramic coating. Oh wait ... also Ceramic coating.

You don't have to use an oven. On the can they have a procedure to cure it on the car. Something like idle it for ten minutes, let it cool completely, repeat, run for 20 minutes etc. Oh and the final steps: watch it all fall off and the rust appear.

Instead of VHT, I used Eastwood's High Temperature Exhaust paint. I first glass-bead blasted my manifold, then (wearing rubber gloves) washed it with hot soapy water, rinsed and blew it dry with compressed air. I applied a liberal coating of Eastwood's PRE paint prep, then sprayed a couple coats of the High Temp paint on. I've put over 1,000 miles on it since January 2009, and haven't noticed any flaking or rusting.

I used it on manifolds and found it worked well.

Headers...not a chance. They are a totally different ball game. Even powder coating will come off if you have a problem with timing etc..

As mentioned, don't waste your time

I've used VHT on headers it lasted 2 years then started going bad slowly. Acetone wash and sand blast prep is a must. If you touch them with your bare hands before or after paint you will see it soon! I gave up on ceramic coatings, my new Jet Hot headers rusted and so did another fellows, not sure where he went. Mine are pealing badly on my Dart. Jet Hot did em twice! The only thing that I find that works every time is stainless steel. Its only too expensive if your selling the car. I've had my Cuda for 27 years, never using mild steel again. Ad up the value of your time , blasting, paint, prep year after year?

Maybe VHT has gone south like a lot of good products?? DUNNO???

I've used it for years and never had an issue. But it's been awhile since I've used it on a daily driver. Limited use within the last 3 or so years on customers cars and it's held up fine. I know this from when they come in for periodic maintenance. Powder /Ceramic coatings etc all seem to fail rather quickly. Especially in the areas that don't get adequately coated IE: between the tubes etc.

just sandblast headers and use stove polish, the stuff you brush on then rub in. works like a charm.
