Who fills nitrous bottles? Question is do you fill them if bottle is out of certification. I have filled them for years and have not made certification a must have. I am now thinking liability wise that filling out dated bottles is not in my best interests. I know a lot has to do with the DOT and its regulations.

For new customers, I will fill them once if they are recently out of date. After that they must have them re-dated. Regular customers I inform before they are out of date. Luckily for me there is a fire safety company only about 3 miles away, which can hydro test bottles for me. It is about $30. For $40 on top of the re-fill I will get them tested for the customer so they don't have to try and find the place.

Thanks for the reply. I wish we had a place near by that could do re-certifications. That would be very helpfull. I take it that the tech inspections do not include bottle dates?

Fire extiguiser places can do it. Google hydrostatic testing for your area.

Hydro involves placing a cly in a tank of water and pressurizing the cly and watching how much water is displaced, the cly most flex back to about where it started to pass testing. Then the same tester stamps the current date and his stamp identfieing the tester. It's good for 5 years.

I did and no luck. Our local Air Gas company can do it but they only send a large ammount of bottles in at once. They claim 90 to 120 days aprox before it would return. Way up here in Upper Michigan there is not much specialty buisness.

No one has "told" me as a tech to check the dates on the bottles and there is no mention of the date stamp in the NHRA Rule book. So technically it should pass.

However, IF a tech were being overly aggressive with his powers, he would have grounds to prevent the outdated bottle from being used at "his" event. Since it would be considered a "safety" item, it would make sense that it should not pass. For the record, there is no requirement the bottle be in the car for tech.

However, I did "catch" a friend trying to get by without a blow-off tube on the bottle in the passenger seat by not having the bottle in for the tech inspection. I knew why and scolded him in the staging lanes later with the bottle installed and gave him a stern warning to have it corrected "next" time.

I have found that it is not a tech problem as much as getting someone to fill the bottle. I recently had to have my shifter co2 bottle tested before the guy would fill it. And there's only one place locally that will fill a bottle like that. It cost about $30 to hav e it recertified.
