I'm getting my stock 727 rebuilt next week and I'm looking for any tips that I can have done. The trans is behind a stock 383 4bl. The transmission shop has been in business for 60 years and do stock rebuilds but they are also pretty sharpe, I'll occasionly get on the car but no racing. your comments are appreciated...thanks

I agree with the above, and I'd do a 5:1 or 4.2:1 intermediate band lever also. And for higher upshifts, I'd think about changing the governor to at least a 5200 rpm unit and possibly a "blocker tube" at the servo for a crisp upshift.

have them add the kit that lets it pump fluid in park along with the TF-2 shift kit

add the valve to stop the TC drain back while your at it

change to billet servos and a thicker retainer on the rev/low servo

stronger band struts

I'd PM master Kunkel and ask him for a brief list of things to have the shop do in addition to Scratch's suggestions and possibly some more pieces for you to locate ahead of time for them to sub in. I think I'd want some premium clutch discs in there plus a few other mods.

I'd check with John Cope at CRT as well. He can recommend a list of things to do and has the parts that you will need on hand.

Better yet, have your builder outline the mods he wants to perform and post them here for a critique.

The TF-2 kit includes most of the modifications mentioned.
I think the stock 383-4bbl trans may already have the 3.8:1 ratio front band lever. If the ratio is less than the 3.8 (the ratios are stamped into the side of the lever), use a 3.8 or 4.2:1 ratio lever. I personally don't like the way the 5.0 lever shifts.
The front band levers cost $25 (I think from CRT?)
The TF-2 Shift kit costs around $70? plus labor to install the shift kit (about 1 hour extra on labor.)
That is about all I would upgrade in the trans for a near stock application. You did not mention the torque converter, but if you plan to upgrade the engine later, you mat want to get an upgraded converter?
