I am doing a cam change and decided to change the thrust plate to a tensioner. Now the oil slinger hits the tensioner. Is it necessary to use the oil slinger?

Todays seals are of much better quality than those that were available when the slingers were used oe. I'd prefer to use it as it keeps a person in the mindset of not taking shortcuts that will eventually bite a person in the a$$ but if everything is kosher w your parts and your installation and it will not fit then you can do wo it

An oil-slinger DOES just-that ...slings-the-oil UP to the timing chain and gears. Can you trim the slinger a tad to make it fit? ...BETTER to have some of it there ... than nothing.

The slinger ALSO "shields" the seal to a degree and is important there too. The diff in seals in 2010 ... vs the 70's ? .. LOL ...

Whatchootalkinabout ? ...

There's a whole science revolving around seals. Newer chemistry for materials, better cross-sections, etc. Some of it will spill backward into older applications, especially if the seals also fits a newer application.

A while back I tested a special change in cross-sectional geometry to help keep contaminants from getting between the seal and the shaft, which causes a leak. A seal for the seal, so to speak. Very subtle but worked well.

Polymers used for the seal probably also have to change over the years to match the changes in engine oil chemistry, especially because additives in the oil are responsible to preserve the seal material.

Parts I seek: driver doorpanel, 65 Sport Fury, prefer black, needs to be 7-8 on 10 scale, might buy set 16" x 6" Dodge truck wheel(s), from early 70s?, takes 9" dogdish - need for a research job so cheaper is better. 69-73 C-body caliper brackets and/or splashields Send a PM.

The basic use of the oil slinger is to keep the excess oil splash from the front cover seal area to prevent leakage. There is plenty of oil splash and fog in the crank case to provide adaquate oiling to the chain and sprockets without any additional oiling and the proper installation of the sling would not provide much splash to the chain area any way. In stalled it is cupped over the seal area to keep oil off that area as much as possible and the rounded area facing to the inside of will provide little of no splash.

Short answer: No, lots of people, me included, do not use one. Others have reported that even factory engines didn't always have them.

Frankly I don't know if longevity of the timing chain would be affected, but with the low # of miles people drive these cars I doubt anyone would ever suffer from leaving it out.

...

Then WHY isn't it called a "oil splash shield" then ?

Because, just as it says, it is shielding the oil splash from the front cover seal area. Just look at it in proper installation how it is installed to shield (cup over) the front seal area.

It shouldn't be called a slinger because there is no provision to sling oil on the smooth surface it has and the way it is cupped to cover and protect the seal area.
Not even all came OEM from the factory with one.
