I think the Mopar ECU liked a steady voltage more than an MSD box, but the E-regulator is way ahead -of the points type on voltage "regulation", an inexpensive upgrade.

you can probably get away with what you have, however a new system would provide more consistant voltage. One aspect you need to look at is the wiring itself. Make sure that old wiring is not brittle. Biggest issues with Mopars in my experience is the electrical system. they werent great when new and adding new high voltage components can really stress them. I am sure there is more than one person on this forum that has an electrical horror story.

When I got my A100, the wiring had been butchered to all get out, and I was having major charging issues and killing batteries. I finally said screw it and went to my favorite discount auto store and snagged the alt, V.Reg, and all the wiring that I could get my hands on off of a 74 Dart or something and followed this. http://www.imperialclub.com/Repair/Electrical/charging.htm
All because I couldn't figure what someone else had done with the wiring. It was really simple to do once I figured out what was done with mine. Since then, I'm really happy with the upgraded system. BTW- This upgrade went from a 37 something amp to a 65+ amp alternator. More, yes, but not really streessing the wiring like say using these mega-amp units some guys are using.

The bottom line is if your batt is being kept properly charged (not under or over). those electromechanical regs are real problematic and you can get an oe appearing one w a black cover for $25 to your door from a member here or your parts house will have a wells vr706 (might be vr607) which is electronic but not stock appearing but your not stock anyway. A suggestion: w batt in trunk I'd use large enough cables and make sure EACH connection is clean w minimal voltage drop.
