Fired the new s/b 408 stroker engine up today and had way to much oil pressure. It was idling about 85 and up over 100 at 2500rpm.Was pushing oil out the seals.I put on a new melling M72HV oil pump with the new combo. My clearences were good,do you think its an oil pump issue? My old HV pump maintained about 65 to 70 at any rpm.Can you check oil pumps, how do you check the pressure relief valve?

do you mean leaking out the crank seals? assuming the gauge it right and it sounds like it is the most likely culprit is the relief valve being stuck shut. years ago i made the mistake of putting the cup plug that goes in after the spring in backwards which compressed the spring. it had 150# and swelled the oil filter up but fortunately didn't pop it. pulled the pan and checked the pump finding my mistake. i would never install an oil pump without disassembling and inspecting it. sure sounds like the relief valve, only way to really check it is disassemble it. how long have you had it running?

X 3
BUT LET the motor get hot 1st and see where your psi is at lets say 180 degrees.then play around with the relief spring if the pressure doesnt go down enough. my 65 dodge coronet has about 100 cold but then drops down and stays around 65 all the time hot.

x 2 ... get the oil hot .. then give us #'s.

BTW ....what is the oil spec? ... a straight 30 or 40 weight will give huge OP #'s when cold.

Im not risking it,im pulling the motor.Im using straight 30W oil.Its already pushing oil past the rear main.I wish it was a big block that way i could get to it easier.Pulling my motor is a real pain.So when i get the oil pump off, what do i look for if something is stuck?

Look at the bypass valve, some of them dang Melling small block HP and HV pumps have BB valves in them. The SB valve has two holes in the side of it, the BB don't

IMO 30 weight is to thick for a new motor.

Drill a small hole in the cup and use a sheet metal screw to screw into it and pry it out with the screw. you can buy another small cup at a good parts house or weld the hole up in the old cup and reuse it
