Guys,

My neihbor came over today asking me how I could tell if a 70 challenger he's looking at is a real or a fake sixpack car. I went thru the usual stuff like the vin# in which both the windshield and the fender ones are missing. Next I asked about pulling the seat and looking for the build sheet,he hasnt done that yet.Since its a 4 speed car I asked if it has a Dana he said no an 8.75 which I thought were only on auto's when equipped with a hemi or 440?? Here's the question what else can he check? Dont hemi's and sixpack cars have torque boxes in front of the rear wheels? Is there any quick accurate way to tell if its the real thing??

Thanks-Gary

No VIN on the dash is a major red flag.
Is there a sticker inside the driver's door with the VIN number on it?
Does the seller have a title for the car?
What is the VIN on the title?
You need to get a VIN number for the car.
There should be VIN sequence numbers on the front radiator support and on the cowl in front of the windshield(drivers side).

All original 4 speed cars with 440's (4 barrel and Sixpack) and Hemis had Dana 60's

Run, run away!

It could be something as innocent as replacing the dash pad, but if the original VIN tag and fender tag are unavailable the car is worth the same as a 318 car in similar condition with similar parts (actually probably less). If he has the tags and those numbers don't match the stamped body numbers, run away.

Someone told me that the genuine six-pack 440 motor was externaly balanced what you could see at the front balance wheel that would have counterweights. Cause it had a different crankshaft...

But I'm not sure if this is correct.

After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

This car sounds like trouble. If it were real, don't you think the owner would go out of his way to prove it with a VIN tag and fender tag making it a valuable car?

Yes and no.

The 69 six Packs didn't use the heavy rod IIRC but in 70 they introduced the heavier rods and hence the external balancing but they were not just on 6-pack engines in fact they used them up through the mid 70's on 4bbl engiens also.

Additionally I have seen those rods in motors that were not externally balanced so it as always with Ma Mopar it isn't a hard fast rule.

At least that has been my experience.
