I've got a '68 RR with a 383 and 727. It appears it's set up (before I got it) with a tranny cooler mounted externally in front of the rad. However, the tranny does not run to the rad, it just goes to the external tranny cooler. Mancini Racing told me that is not plumbed correctly. He said it should got to the radiator to warm up, and also be connected to the tranny cooler for cooling.
Does this make sense to anyone? With a proper rad built for an auto, do I need the externally mounted cooler?
Thanks, Jay

The one in the rad is the important one, and they are right. It is also a warmer on cold starts. The external one(the added one) becomes necessary with higher stall converters. You can probably get by without it, but you do have it, so why not run it? If you run both, the external cooler should be plumbed into the line that goes to the rear of the trans.

Cool. I saw that pic in my restoration guide and my '68 serv manual. However, it is never clearly stated when an external tranny cooler should be used. Is it with an auto AND a/c? Is is good to have one regardless, for better tranny life?
As Dave stated, it's there so I might as well use it.
