Ive always wanted to tackle a transmission rebuild and now I am ready to do so. I have a 1972 small block 727 that was fine until I reved it one day in park.. then it started squealing like a belt on the engine and would no longer go into forward gears or park. Id love to try rebuilding this to go behind my mild 360 build. It is a stock bottom end 1980 360 with 2.02 valve J heads and hughes whiplash cam. What is a good 727 rebuild kit and are their any special tools I will need? Thanks

Drain the pan before you R&R it & replace the pan. W a bristle brush scrub the exterior (every nook & cranny) squeaky clean (trust me on that one). Need ~8ft of long workbench to set everything out in sections in order. Set the trans horizontle on your bench, put your dial indicator on the input shaft & see how much end play you have and write that figure on the inside of the bellhousing w a magic marker. Turn trans belly up & remove the pan and the valve body. Take out the (6) front pump bolts and 2 of the threaded holes are larger inside (3/8" iirc) and get 2 long pieces of allthread and thread it in & rig up a slide hammer to pull the front pump out then undo the kickdown band and start taking everything out in sections taking notes(trust me on that one)like which side of which thrust washer faces front or rear etc and pics and set everything out on the bench just like an exploded diagram on an instruction sheet which is why acquiring an extra workbench is a smart move. Take out the 2 large Phillips screws in the ext housing so you can access the large snap ring to release the ext housing. Several C clamps will let you (CAREFULLY) compress the clutch packs to R&R the discs. Take the front pump and the ext housing in to your tranny shop to have the bushings replaced along w the driveshaft yoke and the torque converter so they can check the fit of the bushings when they are done pressing them in and the clutch packs have bushings that need to be replaced. Buy Munroes tranny bible and cultivate a good relationship w John Kunkel (cash donations work very well). Large(internal) snap ring pliers/inch lb torque wrench/ Large C clamps or let the shop R&R them if you are not comfortable w that. That's all I can think of for now. EDIT transgo TF-2 shift kit, raybestos discs are good. Mark the sides of every part (where pertinent) with an F or R for front and rear w your magic marker) and if it comes off when you solvent wash each part just remark it

Koleen Steels, Alto Red Clutches, Transgo TF2 kit, Kevlar Bands, all things I put into my transmission (not all at once, TF2 was already in there) when I rebuilt it. She shifts good, and handles drag racing without issue. If you end up with extra parts.... ummm... check again!!! (AMHIK!) The tail shaft DOES have a snap ring on the end of it inside the transmission... just sayin. Get whatever manual you can on rebuilding it too and that will help. Above post is very good as well! I agree with all of it.

First, get Carl Monroes book on 727 torqueflite lots of valuable info, Amazon has it, very good investment.

I would stick to the red lined bands and you don't need any aids to remove the clutches as someone claims. Not very difficult, just pay attention and keep everything in order. Monroes book and having someone with experience to help if you find yourself in need. Buy your parts thru CRT.

Correct: C clamps are for the servos not the clutch packs (been awhile since I did my last one). GM (pun intended ) it's always a pleasure to interact w you and it's been awhile

Ok yah, I missed the C-clamp comment, I never used one during my rebuilding cuz I didn't have to take that portion apart! Clutches and steels had no issue with by hand
