Hello.

I'm finally swapping the crummy 2bbl from my '73 400 (Dodge Truck).

I was given a scummy ol' 400 Thermoquad intake from a '78 engine.

Question is, how do I deal with all the 70s emissions garbage? I don't have an EGR, so can I just make a thick steel block-off, squirt a lil RTV and call it a day?

Should I do anything with whatever this junk is on the intake floor? Fill the hole? (holes?)

Your thoughts?

Also, should I open-up the carb adapter to equal the Thermoquad size with a die grinder? (I'm using a Carter 4bbl, so the adapter is required on the TQ intake) Or not worth the effort? (Drag performance is not the reason for the swap, just reliability)

Make a plate and block the EGR port off. I welded up the holes down inside and my 400 didn't run as well, swapped to another stock intake and it was fine.
Now I run a Edlebrock aluminum and it doesn't have the holes....Hmmm!

I'd scrap it and find an older 383 intake. Or get an aluminum one.

Yes just make a plate & block it off and if the protrusion on the left side can be unscrewed/tossed then yes as it restricts flow. the holes left over are not a problem in your stock app. On the flat thin metal adapter plate for a square bore carb on a spreadbore intake the adapter plate needs to cover the bowed out area on the intake for the spreadbore type (TQ) carb. What area on that are you inquiring about?

Ok, good advice. What about removing the big piece of crap sticking up off the intake floor and just leaving the hole? Looks like it has a bolt head on it.

Anybody know what that thing is for?

Thanks, I was posting while you replied on the air-flow restricting junk.

My spacer is thick, maybe a little over 1/4". Now that I think about it, I can't see any advantage to removing material and matching the spread bore. The carb is a spread bore, but no where near the same difference between bores as the thermoquad.

W you using a non Mopar spread bore carb mock it up & make sure the outer perimeter flange area covered by the gasket is wide enough so no vac leaks & you're set.

Should be good, I've put these carbs on Thermo intakes a zillion times, but not for a decade, so I'm as rusty as that intake.

Thanks
