Was wondering what it costs in labor to assemble a long block. This would include degreeing in the cam.

It depends, are you talking about just bolting it together?

Or checking all the bearing clearances, coil spring bind, retainer to valve seal clearance, oil pump pickup clearance, piston to valve clearances, brush cleaning all of the oil passages, etc...

It could vary greatly depending on the work..

the cost can vary greatly, depending on the complexity of the build. every engine build needs to have all specs and clearances checked and corrected, but some are cookie cutter type combo's (meaning you know what to expect) and others are much more complex.
it would be hard to quote a price without having parts in hand, or at least knowing more about the engine in question.
as an example, it take a lot more time to completely assemble a competitive stocker/ comp eliminator/ blown alky/ etc. etc. type engine than it will a 375 hp street 440 engine.

Give a little more info on the build. And are you having any machine work done or buying any parts from the place you want to do the assy? You may get a bit of a break on the assy rate if you throw them some other work as well.

My guess someone has done the machine work and he wants to know a fair price to assmeble the short block.

Every time I have paid someone to do this it broke. Twice was over piston to valve clearance was not properly check and the heads were at the shop but the gaskets just hadn't showed up. Screw that I assemble my own. Cost me a little in Micrometers as I don't care for plastigauge. A few years ago I had a line bore main job done and did not clean out the holes feeding the cam tunnel as I don't use them. Well that blew up and it was my fault. I'll still take my chances. 20 years one screw up on me. Four engines done by professionals four blowed up.

The machinist that I use does mostly chevy work and he has a price list for work to be done. Asemb short block start @ $350, check deck hight $40, check piston/valve clearance $50, degree cam $75, set spring hight $50 ect, ect. He will do as much or as little as you want him to do. Ford and Mopar slightly higher, as usual. He also has a price list you can use for other stuff to, such as clean block, so much, disassemble complete engine, so much ect, ect. You can look at the list and get a good idea what it will cost you.

The speed shop In my area charges $750 if all clearances have been already checked & it is ready to assemble. What this means is that is the final charge to put it together after all the parts are prepared, checked & machined by them.

i guess that makes you qualified.

even though things may be machined, you still have a lot to check and verify. it's not like you could just throw it together and expect it to be right, or know what you have, other than a bunch of parts bolted together.

Even if I were to check Nothing and just Bolt up all the parts and Drink like a Drunk Monkey, Id want at least $500 to do the job. "INSTALL/BOLT" Long Block.

Rings, Rod bearings, Rod caps and bolts, Crank Main Bearings, thrust bearings,End gaskets, Main caps and Bolts, Oil pump pickup tube, Oil pan and bolts, head gaskets ,head and head bolts, camshaft, lifters, pushrods, rockers and rocker shafts and bolts and shims. Timing chain, gear and crank gear. Index cam to a desired ICL ETC,ETC,ETC ETC

i agree that is a very vague question. while Dave's price is probably a decent ballpark there are a whole lot of variables. are we talking about cylinder head and valve train assembly? oiling system etc. one thing no one has mentioned is the responsibility that goes along with assembling what can be an assortment of very expensive parts. how often can you just bolt together an engine without having to correct anything? i long for the day that happens.

We do it like this:
Proud owner of engine comes home with all his parts from the machine shop...
Buys Pizza and Beer, and calls us all over...
After many stories, and proper lubrication, 4 or 5 drunk monkeys put it all together...
Cam break-in commences at 1AM!!

If there are 4 or 5 drunk monkeys involved in putting it together with plenty of Pizza and Beer and Fun, Its all about the Sport, no pun intended. mike
