Who knows, after the mod, maybe I'll be able to squeeze 275s in
275's should work, but might require a slightly larger mod in that area. The important thing is to have the right backspacing on the wheel. With less backspacing, the wheel will be sitting a little farther out from the hub, and will then be 'closer' to the fender, requiring more of a mod. But with more backspacing, then you will start getting into rubbing the frame. I've got 275's for my rears - I'll swap one onto the front tomorrow or Sunday, and give you a report on the fit.

I'm just having trouble bringing myself to mess with perfect, original fenders.
That's a 'problem' I didn't have. My original fenders are long gone - the car was a rust bucket when I got it, and they were not salvagable. The swap meet replacements that I have are far from perfect, so I didn't have any problem with modifying them, but I can see where you might not want to modify yours.
Sometimes its kind ov a 'curse' (in a way) to have perfect, virgin sheetmetal with original paint on it. There are things i'd love to do to my car, but well... well you get the picture.
My first real fast muscle car was a $400 rust bucket that we fixed or modified with a big hammer and a welder. We didn't need no special parts, and if something was in the way or not fitting right we fixed it in minutes. I miss that...
If i wasn't so attached to this particular car i would have been far better off selling it and keeping the bashed 70 Barracuda coupe i had.

I swapped the 275's from the rear on to the front, and it looks like a close, but good fit. I cranked the wheel fully from side to side and checked all clearances, and the closest the tire got was slightly more than 1/2 inch at the point of the modification. The back side of the wheel opening was good, and the inside (near the frame) was good on when cranked both ways. I took 2 more pics to show the fit.
The first one is from about the same place as the closer side shot in the previous pics, and was taken before I moved the wheel position to give some reference on how much closer it is with the larger tire.

This pic shows the point where the tire is at it's closest to the fender (or anything else, for that matter). It's just slightly more than 1/2 inch away from the fender here. The tires are close to new, so there hasn't been too much wear on them yet, which would increase the gap. I'm also thinking 275's now when it comes time to replace the fronts! Unfortunately, I can't take it for a road test with these on due to the disassembly for painting.
