Spent part of last week and all day today lining up body panels. Not just moving the bolts. I'm talking about hitting the edges with a spoon and dolly, jacking out the tail end of the quarter panel to fit the deck lid, slide hammering the edges of the fenders to fit the doors. All I keep hearing is "It's only a racecar". To me it has to look good to. Am I nuts? Maybe I should just leave it flat black primer. Nah, its on to bondo and paint. Just wish I was faster. Still want to make passes this year,I hope.

by all means necessary..
just dont go soo far overboard you loose interest adn the thing ends up setting ..cause you set out to climb to big a mountain..

I find if I keep it running/racing...you dont loose interest ..and gradual progress is made.

can tell you how many projects ive not finished cause i went over board.
keep up the good work

The better you make it fit, the less the air drag...
plus it just looks better

Do it your way but also don't get so bogged down you give up,the guy I bought my Daytona race car from had 800 hours block sanding it.Now it was the straightest fiberglass car I've ever see and I loved it but you can loose sight of the big picture...hopefully I didn't go on too much and loose you.

I'm not burned out. I work on it on my day off and 3-4 nights a week. It's getting body work at my friends shop which is located right across the street. He will do the final body and paint. I'm just so slow at it. I'll be back on it tommorow.

No reason a racecars fit and finish can't be nice... Not that mine is, but I wish it was.

How about some updated pics?

No you are not. You are taking pride in your car and efforts. That is a good thing. However, a life of racing will beat the body up; so don't expect it to stay perfect. Enjoy what you have, and don't freak out with the first scratch/ding/dent/etc.

"Am I nuts?"

Doug, the fact that you still want to do this at our age should answer that question.

My buddy Jim keeps telling me I need to finish it while he's still alive. As for bumps and scratches, there part of it. My street/race car I have now was painted in 87. Still looks pretty decent.

I hate being asked this question.
Honestly , I feel it is best discussed between family members , mental health professionals and possibly a member of the clergy.
But to stack another cord of wood on the fire........if you didn't do it to your satisfaction , I guarantee that it would drive you nuts.
Every time you looked at it.........slowly but surely.
First you'd be talking to yourself.
Then you'd be talking to inanimate objects.
Then , it's the sport coat with the six foot sleeves.
Done once and done well will never let you down.

I like to see race or restified cars look good, We took ours to a good, reputable body shop. He adjusted the gaps, flattend the body panels, lined up the swages, etc etc. Probably looked better than it ever did, even out of the factory. It was there for a month more than he estimated.
At the first meeting, the front tyre picked up a stone, dented the fender and cracked the paint
You got to or cause it happens.

Wouldn't life just be easier if you could live with yourself racing it rusty and in primer?

But I know you. You're not crazy...just anal.

Just don't go overboard with it. I find for myself I need to see visual progress to keep myself motivated.

I Agree, Do it Now and don't look back thinking "I should have made it look nicer".
They will get their bumps and bruises but it will still look nice for years to come.
My car was done in 1998 and it still looks Good.
