Hi guys, I'd like to install 295/50-15 in the rear of my AAR, wondering if anyone ever tried fitting this size on a 70 up Cuda? I have no idea what backspacing would be necessary, and I'd rather not have to move my leafs in. Thanks for any input!

This is how I measure for backspace -

Make or buy a plumb bob. Drop a line from the inside of the wheel house on whatever the tire will rub on first. Usually it's the leaf spring. Don't forget to correct for wheel travel if there is anything the tire will rub when the suspension is compressed. Make your first mark on the floor where the plumb bob lands.

Now drop a line from the surface the rim seats to. Brake drum, rotor, whatever. Mark a line on the floor parallel to the first mark.

Now drop a line from the outer wheelhouse correcting for anything that the tire will rub when the suspension is compressed. Make your third mark on the floor parallel to the first two marks.

The outer marks are the maximum section width tire you can stuff in there. Section widths of the tires is usually posted on the tire mfg's website. Subtract 1" from the section width to allow for 1/2" clearance on the inner and outer edges of the tires.

For backspace measure from the center mark to both outer marks and subtract the smaller number from the larger. That number is your backspace positive or negative depending on which way the wheel needs to shift to be in the center of the wheel well.

Do the same on the front and account for the turning of the wheels. I mock up a cardboard wheel and attach it to the wheel mating surface. Use a ruler during lock to lock turning to see what will fit in the front.

Here's my 72, not a great pic, it is tight, and I narrowed the rear end

wow, that's what I was thinking - Torque Thrusts - looks tough! I just worry about 50 series being too short and not filling the wheel well.

4.5" rearspace with a 295 will clear the leafs but will most likely put the outer side of tire even with the wheel lip. In my past running N-50s on a 10" wide wheel I needed airshocks to keep from hitting the tire on the bumps.

Keep old mopars alive.

295 50 50 tires do fit with 4.5" back spacing.
Here are some pictures using 15 x 8 rims.

My goal was to fit the biggest tire in a stock wheel well. It does fit! BUT, if I added a second person in my car, the passenger tire rubbed on the quarter panel. Even when it was just me driving and I hit a bump and it excersized the suspension, the tire on the pass side would rub - bad.
One day I, I tried to drive two additional people. No - way. I had to drive home and change cars to drive the other people.

I measured that a 12" wide tire would fit. Depending on your suspenson travel.

It got to the point that I did not want to drive wth the 295 50 15 tires anymore.
I switched back to 275 50 15 for more than one reason, though.
I need traction. The standard street tires would not grip on dry roads.
So back to the "Sticky" soft tires.......

Thanks! Good info......
Yes, I am also considering 275's (60 series though)...personally I like the wide tire look and am afraid the 275's would look a little skinny...
I would consider raising the rear of the car, but also am afraid if it will adversely affect handling.

I am running 275/50 on my challenger and when i compared them to my buddy who is running 275/60 "same brand and type tire" The difference is night and day how wider my tire is.

I still have those Cooper Cobra 295 50 15 tires that I took off. Just sitting around, almost new. If you are interest in purchasing....

I thought 275 is 275mm in cross section, regardless of the aspect ratio.....I'll have to look at a 275/50 vs a 275/60 sometime......

if a 50 series tire is wider than a 60 series (given the same section width), this goes against what I have learned about tire sizing....please elaborate.

A 275/50 shouldn't be wider than a 275/60, just shorter.
