The RHS's are going on bracket car that has the shorblock waiting. The EQ's are simply an experiment to see what they flow/what we can make them flow. They MIGHT go on to my 408" street/strip deal that's next after the Duster moder is done and running. I LOVE this (low budget)small block stuff!!

First observations -

1) The RHS's are HEAVY
2) The port opening dimensions on each are very close in size
3) The Isky iron rockers probably won't work with the beehive retainers. DOH...
4) The RHS chamber/valve layout looks very effiecent (sp?)
5)Overall they both look like very nice pieces for their intended use.

Nothing important to report yet. Will have "as bought" flow data on the RHS's Saturday some time. Gotta get valves to start playing with the EQ's.

Would very much like to see some OOTB flow #s off the same bench .

Are you using the same size valves in both?

BTW - Did you know EQ head are cast in Australia, in a rural area in the state of Queensland called Toowoomba -

The company is a US one, which is why there are so few guys running them down here - most sets went to export - go figure

Here's a summary of one of there recent shipments - amazing what you can find on the net!!

Flow results from today on the RHS 2.02 head...

RHS LA-X

*First column is OOTB,
*2nd is with about .025 removed from the intake side of the chamber wall.
*3rd column is a real quick guide area trim.

INTAKE
Lift
0.100 68.9 73.3 71.6
0.150 101.4 107.2 104.9
0.200 131.8 138.3 136.8
0.250 160.6 163.3 164.3
0.300 185.7 187.4 190.1
0.350 207.4 207.7 210.4
0.400 225.3 224.3 227.4
0.450 238.9 236.5 240.3
0.500 248.5 245.3 250.3
0.550 252.2 248.3 255.5
0.600 255.3 258.8 258.2

EXHAUST (as cast, no changes) w/1.750" pipe

0.100 62.1
0.150 83.2
0.200 103.8
0.250 138.1
0.300 152.1
0.350 161.8
0.400 168.2
0.450 171.8
0.500 172.7
0.550 173.2
173.1

We were then wondering how other benches are reporting 270-ish and then it dawned on us: Flow them WITHOUT a spark plug...duh...

Peak with the 10 minutes worth of chamber touch up and guide smoothing, the intake went 273.8 @ .600, with turbulance right after .600, although they still went 269.4 @ .650...

Chambers measures at 62.5

Pretty good bang for the buck, I'd say. The as supplied valve job was VERY conservative, leaving quite a bit of margin at the valve edge. We're going to spend about 8 more hours this week and rub on the guide areas some more and correct the VJ and we'll find more flow, I'm sure.

Looks like the short side of the exhaust can be laid back a touch, so we'll try that when the intakes are all done.

As they are, they SHOULD support a 525-550-ish HP motor. Again, pretty good head for the coin!

We won't get to the EQ's for another week, as we need to get valves and work schedules won't allow any more time until then.

WHAT??!! No way! I'm a COMPLETE doofis compared with the guys that do this everyday. I'm just reporting what we saw today and HOPING those 270-ish numbers from everyone else are with no plug. Otherwise I have a MAJOR brain ache going on...

They come as cast with a 1.92 but these guys will sell you a ready to bolt on head with a 2.02 valve:

1) Brian at IMM machine. He's on here as OU812, or you can google IMM Machine,

2) Mike a MRL Performance in Michigan. mrlperformance.com

3) Hughes...hughesegines.com

...just to name a few.

If your using a 2.02 valve, and do a good valve job/blend and a backcut on the valve, you should be able to get much more than that.
My bench doesn't put up #'s very easily but our heads go mid to high 260's at .500 lift.
If you want to see, they are only 1295.00 plus shipping!!
Or you can drive down and I'll throw one on the bench for you...with the spark plug IN!!

Hey Brian, I was waiting for you to chime in! Smooth sales pitch you snuck in there...I like it!

Yea, my point was really tonque-in-cheek about the plug...that's the only way we got 273. BUT, like I said, my un-trained eyes can see there is flow to be gained in the "as supplied" vj.

PLEASE, don't anyone take this posting as a knock to anyone or trying to "take shots" at anyone else's work. I just thought you'd all like to know another source of flow data. Most important, I'm just trying to learn more about these small block moders...

I will drive down when it's time to get the next set, by golly!!

We use a special cutter we have made for us. There is 4 angles, each has a different thickness and after cutting there is a nice big ledge where the cutter digs into the bowl.
We blend that out...that's it. Just smooth the casting into the bottom cut. I leave all the angles there too, no extra blending.
The top cut is left nice and wide, and I'm carefull not to cut the valve job too deep and leave a ledge in the chamber.
One other thing...the back cut on the intake valve is healthy!
Hope that helps some...
Brian

I'd rather not say...that WOULD be taking a jab at someone. Chalk it up to not all flow benches agree. Or some aren't even close...LOL!

Thanks Brian for that info...I appreciate it.

at that price why would you go with cast iron head? unless some kind of rule requires you to?

Because as I've said a thousand times it seems...our OOTB head flows mid 260's at .500 lift and comes with beehive springs for .600 lift, 8mm Ferrea 6000 series valves, our valve job, surface cut.
Compare that to OOTB eddy heads, their not even close. And they are more $$$ with lesser quality and lesser value.

It would have been good to see your numbers with the 1.92 valves in both the EQ and RHS heads as a baseline. If I remember right my stock RHS castings went 238 @ .500 with the 1.92 on the "as-supplied" seat. Your numbers seem pretty good for the bigger valve and valve job.

Just looking at the "as cast" numbers from Ryans site on the various small block heads, it looks like the only head that does better(as cast) than the RHS-X is the Indy 360-1 w/270cfm, at .500 lift. Even the W5 is not as good at .500 lift. So i think i can see why Brian an the OP are excited about this economical head. True, it does'nt have the potential of most aluminum heads, but i think it fills an important niche for those guys that wanna upgrade to a very affordable performance head.

When I first flowed these heads, with std. magnum valves they went 247 cfm on my bench.
That was untouced seat and valve. Backcutting the intake valve did almost nothing!

I am surprised at how well they flow with just a 2.02 valve and valve job done, but I've tested 4 different heads so far and the worst was 264cfm @.500 lift and the best was 268cfm. At .550 lift the worst was 269 and the best was 272.
They all stall at the .565 mark.

When I do a flow test I always check for leaks so if I had any problems I would have known before doing any testing.
If you run the flow #'s from my bench with the dual plane intake on the RHS heads, and run the #'s we got from our dyno test through pipemax, they correlate? very well showing we needed approx. 230'ish cfm to make 485HP and they flowed 234cfm at .500 lift and 229 cfm at .460 lift.

Kind of funny because the flow bench said the bigger SV intake flowed so much more than the dual plane the engine should have made more power at some point...but it never did!

And for another reference the EQ head with std. magnum valve flows about 240cfm on my bench max!

Really? That's not taking a shot it's reporting your findings. Which after some light work, you got numbers similar to others. I guess people should become comfortable in buying things and not getting what they pay for. You clearly didn't get what you expected from the provider, correct?

To me, it's more about finding out if your stuff is an anomoly or they have a happy bench compared to others. Look at the hughes numbers for an RHS X head with a 1.92... That's some happy numbers, 263 at .600 with a +/- 6 cfm variation. 275 at .700???

the supplied VJ better be very conservative for a 2.02 valve, since all the literature I've seen for them is that they use a stock magnum 1.92" valve diameter OOTB.

Yea, in hindsight (isn't that always 20/20?) we should have started with the 1.92, as I am now curious. We'll get to the EQ's, but I'm hearing 240-ish with a 1.92 and about 10-15 more with a 2.02, depending on the VJ from most everyone I ask.

Further update: We grabbed the other untouched (by us) "as supplied" head and moved the valve job to where it should be and here's what we got for the upper numbers: Lower numbers improved by the same % in at most lifts...

262.1 @ .500
263.3 @ .550
263.8 @ .600

so it sounds like the "as supplied" heads have the stock RHS valve job for a 1.92" valve, but supplied with a 2.02?

kinda like OEM mag head valve jobs are typically undersized to the point where a 1.88/1.6 valve will work in the stock valve job?
