.......should I expect a set of gears to last? We set it up with 4.10's with a spool and have beat the snot out of it for 4 seasons (approximately 700 runs) launching off the t brake. We remove the cover and inspect after each season and reseal and refill with synthetic 75w-90. It always looks fine with a decent pattern and very little debris on the magnetic drain plug. I was just wondering what to expect?

How many 1/4 mile passes do you have on your Dana 60's?

I have gotten as few as 440 and over 2000. The set that went over 2000 runs was a factory Dana 4.88 set. Avg is about 1000

What finally broke? Was it the gear? Pinion? Cap? Bearing wore out?

According to some they never break. But this is from a guy with a lowly 8 3/4.

If the MODS did their job I would not be hitting the notify MOD button. LOL

I know a guy that runs 10.01 in his bracket duster and broke three sets of standard gears and finally went to pro gears. not sure how many runs he had on each set, but I do know he has a transbrake.

All kidding aside.I see ether the ring gear teeth or pinion teeth are broke. If it happens alot to the same guy most likly it is being set up wrong.Same thing true about the 8 3/4.

I am on my 4th set in 17 years at about 200 passes per year average. In my case it's always the pinion gear that cracks and eventually starts making racket and I replace, none have failed yet. The set that lasted the longest was a steet set but the car was slower, heavier, but more than 200 passes per year then too.

here are 3 and 4 running Dana's in our GTX and 63 Dodge. we chose to use the Dana for the strength and fitment in our b body cars. The Ford 9 inch was our 2nd choice but for fitment and the loss of horse power due to parasitic friction the dana won out.
it will depend on whether a pro gear or standard gear is being used, the way I understand how the softer pro gear is designed to work IE take the shock of a trans brake and higher HP engines. The pro gear {the way I understand them} will need to be set up after X amount of runs since the softer gears do wear at a faster rate than the harder street gears...
I've broken both 8 3/4 and Dana's, the ring gear in both cases. IMO it's tough to know how a part will last. weight of car quality of parts, how they initially were set up and broken in ect.

Chuck, the Dana in my car was run from 1985 to 2007 off the trans brake on the same fluid before it finally had 3 teeth on the ring gear let go. This was a stock gear set too

My car only runs 11's,but the Dana was installed in 1982 and it still has it's original gear set.OEM Dana 5.13 gear, the axle assy.is a Direct Connection part. The new 4,56's I have are also stock OEM Dana parts. No trans brake and I change the fluid every year.

WOW! 22 years on the same fluid!! LOL I know they don't contaminate the fluid like a street car would but....... of course your car weighs what? 2200# soaking wet?
