I am trying to id two 340 blocks I have but am confused. Some of the stamping are very hard to read.
cast date 9-10-68
number in pass side of oil pan rail=
BH29P9R162347
number on drivers side below head=
FW340P26220125

Second block:
cast date 2-11-72
number on oil pan rail=
2P453085
Number below head=
HM340R39538015

Question 1) Why is there a difference in the number of digits by the oil pan?
Question 2) Is there a direct connection between the numbers by the head and oil pan?

I have been trying to figure it out in the little white numbers books but I am so confused.
Any help would be great

cast date 9-10-68
number in pass side of oil pan rail=
BH29P9R162347

number on drivers side below head=
FW340P26220125

F=1970 Series model year engine (I'm betting it's an E which =1969)
W = Windsor Plant
340 = Cubic inches
P = Premium Fuel
2622 = October 1, 1969 Assembly date
125 = Sequence assembled

Second block:
cast date 2-11-72
number on oil pan rail=
2P453085
Number below head=
HM340R39538015

H = 1972 series model year engine
M = Marysville Plant
340 = Cubic Inches
R = Regular Fuel
3953 = Assembly date = May 24, 1972 assembly date
8015 Assembly sequence

The difference in the VIN# on the oil pan rail is simple, in some 1969 vehicles (in this case a 69 Barracuda) the full VIN# is stamped there. In the later years they abreviated the VIN#.

Now that I look at it is an E

Can you tell what car they came in?
Next stupid question why would one need premium fuel?

Check my plant info on the second one, I made a correction.

In 1972 they dropped the compression ratio which allowed the use of Regular fuel, previous years had higher compression requiring premium.

The older engines had higher a higher compression so Premium fuel was reccomended.

So there is really no way to know what car the 72 came in since it only had a partial vin right?
(unless you had the vin of the car)

Could this be BH29P9B162347 ?

Also, for the engine serial numbers (not to be confused with the VIN) you can check the TSBs.

The TSBs that deal with the engine numbers are always in Chapter 25 & normally one of the first ones in the chapter;

It depends. In a lot of cases I can tell what they came from for 1970 Hamtramck VINs. (as you know already)

1972, not so much, but I do not collect data on them. If someone did though.....

That said, is this;

Quote:

2P453085

2B 453085 or 2R 453085?

P is right out.

Sorry.

P is not a valid plant code, so could the second digit be a B or an R?

Windsor had a car plant as well an an engine plant.

The Windsor engine plant made the 340s for Hamtramck.

Nope, no P as an assembly plant code.

Do not trust everything you see on the YO site.

On the 72 block the oil pan pas IS 2B453085, and HM340R39538019 on the front

on the 69 block Bh29p9p162347 ( the second "p" could be an "r" oil pan rail Ew340P262200125

I had my wife look at them and this is what we came up with. Some of the numbers are double and triple stamped along with some random 2's upside down. We tried to take pics but they are too fuzzy to see anything. We also tried to do some rubbings but not all the letters would show up

Double and triple stamped would make me think they are restamped blocks not factory markings.

The machine often bounced from the recoil, so ghost images / stamps are common.
