Plymouth's version was the "Commando 273," Dodge version was "Charger 273." Both had chrome air cleaner tops with a decal that said one or the other, depending on whether Plymouth or Dodge vehicle.
The rods, forged crank, oil pan, timing cover, timing tab, harmonic balancer, alternator bracket and pulleys of the first 273's were pretty much lifted straight from a poly 318. That's why an early 273 alternator bracket has two sets of holes (one for the 273 and one for the poly 318), and why the early 273 timing covers have an extra, unused mounting hole on the drivers side.
The 4-barrel 273's used a 248 duration solid lifter cam. Interestingly, so did the 4-barrel versions of 318 polys in at least 1959-60 (not sure about other years). I'm not sure about the lift on the 318 poly 4-barrel cams, but the fact that they have the same duration as the Commando 273's makes me suspect the cam grinds are the same (not saying that the cams themselves are interchangeable, as the poly lobes are not oriented the same as wedge lobes). Haven't been able to confirm that, though.

You're welcome.  This is a bit off topic, but I was trying to remember where I had read that 318 poly 4-barrels had 248 duration cams in 1959, and I found the info in a Chrysler Corp Service Reference Book (one of those small, paperback booklets issued for many years with the little round-headed, square-bodied cartoon tech on the covers) describing the "1959 MODEL FEATURES." About the 318 4-barrel that year, the book said: Quote:
Fury V-800 With Super Pack. This is a 318-cubic-inch engine available for the Sport Fury 2-door Hardtop and the Convertible. It uses a four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust . . . . A new camshaft increases valve opening from 244 degrees to 248 degrees, providing better breathing.

1968 vintage Chrysler Parts High Performance parts catalog shows PN 2465679 solid lifter cam for the 273; 248 degrees intake and exhaust duration, 26 degrees overlap, lift at .425
For the poly 318, PN 1825890 solid cam is 256 degree intake and exhaust duration, 38 degrees overlap and .405 lift...both engines use PN 2469501 solid lifters.

Skyhawk61, the 256 duration, .405" lift cam was used only in the 57-8 dual-quad Fury 318's.
The typical standard-performance 318 poly used a 240 or 244 duration cam, depending on the year.
The 248 duration cam was used in 318 poly 4-barrel engines in 1959 and maybe later years. My point is that I suspect that in putting together the Commando 273 package, Chrysler just borrowed this grind rather than develop an all-new cam profile. Why they wouldn't have used the early Fury profile which I assume would have made more power, I can't say.
BTW, the 273 Commando/Charger cam was 248 duration, .415 lift intake, and .425 lift exhaust, not .425 on both.
