All depends on YOUR set-up, what you desire, and what your engine "tolerates" or performs best with,.....I'd start with 10 degress BTDC and work from there

340's are not torque monsters. More initial timing will help bottom end performance. As said, start with 10 and test. Then test some more with 12, 14, etc. Your starter will be another variable. The original style starter will only take 16-18 or so initial timing. The mini starter will take 24-26 or more. You are after the best vacuum rating that your combo will achieve. This takes testing and some patience.

more details on the eng, what cam, what idle speed. ~10-15 BTDC would be a good range and the vacuum gauge method has been used/recommended then with the initial amt known you would want to shorten the dist slots to get 35 total (w vac adv disconnected/hose plugged) then play w the springs for the adv to come in as fast as possible wo pinging at WOT then if vac adv is used plug it in & give it as much vac advance as it will take (3/32" allen wrench) wo pinging at part throttle.

Hmmm,....what a "co-winkadink" my 340/6 is "locked" in at 32 degrees too, running a Mallory Marine YL mechanical dist,....with 11:1 compression, with a stock starter,......turns over pretty well,...trunk mounted battery too
