So I call a well known carb guy here in Calif. to see what he want to "modify" my 1050 dommy and he says it`s a waste of money because I run an adapter What`s up with that? And this guy`s no joke and his carbs are on some of the fastest p.s.c.a. cars and some wicked fast low 8-sec street cars...........wadda you guys think?

Thankxx........My reason for using this guy was again, his stuff flys and I can drop it off and $400.00 and 4-days later it`s mine.

We have a local shop around here that says the same thing, He said you give up 20 hp with the adapter over a proper 4500 mani

Interesting
Probably as many here including myself are running the 4150 base to Dom adapter.
Looking to update my X-Cellerator in liew of something more modern , probably a Victor.
I'm torn between the 2 styles now
I'll be this out and see where it leads.

On every vehicle I have EVER tested it on I made more power and went faster with a dedicated Dominator intake than with an adapted one. I know many out there say different but IMO it has always been the case.

We ran the indy 4500 intake for a year, I changed and went with the adpater and the car went almost a tenth faster. I then bought a AED carb and picked up a tenth.. Love AED..

Sounds like it's time to buy a manifold if it'll pick up 20 ponies over what you have. Or just get the carb done and final tune it to what you can get out of it with what you have.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

Several years ago I used an M1 low deck 4150 intake with an adapter and an old used 1050 and went 9.96 with a 590 cammed 451 and Eddy heads. I didn't try a 4500 intake but back then the guys that tested this were running best with the adapter and 4150 intake. Every combo is different though.

Tried a 1050 Dominator on an adapter with my 451 when the car was running 10.40s or so. The car slowed two tenths over the BG modified 850 (supposedly 950 CFM) I normally ran.

Are we talking a "stock unmodified intake" vs. a 4150 with adapter? Or a ported 4500 intake dialed in for the combo? I think there's apples vs. oranges here. You may want to verify that with the carb builder.

I am going to have to say ProSport is correct. "every combo is different". I have seen motors on the dyno that make more power with a 4150 and others make more with an adapter and a 4500. Also have had motors that make more HP on the dyno one way, but run faster on the track another.

In my opinion, the 4150 intake with 4500 adapter is a better "general" combo as it helps improve mid-range and idle signals when driving on the street without giving up anything on the top end.

For race only applications this may not be as much of an issue.

Scott

So it is safe to say that no one can truly make a Domi have manners on a street/strip car?
I run a 4150 on mine and some have said that a Domi would make it wail.

I did some intake dyno testing early last year on my 527 bracket motor with Indy SR M.W. size ports, I tested a 440-3 with a 9375HP Dominator on it and then swap that intake to a 440-2 (both unported) and the 440-2 with the two inch tapeered adapter and the same carb. with no changes made around twenty more HP. I added a two inch phenolic spacer to the top of the adapter and pick up some more power I did not try the phenolic spacer on the 440-3 nor did I try the Wilson 1.5 inch reversion spacer I have I will try that at the track, hopefully soon Monte has pointed out that when using a tapeed adapter on a 4150 manifold and not using a comparable spacer under the carb on a domintor manifold that you are not testing apples to apples becuase of the increased phelum volume do to the adapter on the 4150 manifold Dominic, are you going testing soon? If so I have a low deck M1 single plane dominator intake with several spacers and the Wilson reversion spacer if you wanted to test them at the track the same day to solve this dilema Call me if you do want to try that

Ummmm NO! I drive a street car with a Dominator and it has perfrctly fine street manners. It is I think my fifth strep/street car with a Dominator and never had an issue. A Dominator is the most tunable carb Holley sells so if you cannot get one to work right street or strip you are doing it wrong

Like stated every combo is different but I share what I have seena nd found to be true. Once the carb is tuned for the application from my experience the 4500 intake wins. Just slapping it on and not doing any tuning is not an accurate measurement of ANY change you make to your car.

I run a 9375 1050 on the street. the CARB SHOP.. set it up, right out of the box, works great.

If you believe in your carb guy. I would listen to him.

Years ago I had a 500 inch RB with Stage V iron heads that were not very big. It was a Weiand Team G 4500 and 1050 Dom, would not run as quick as the 850 Annular Discharge on a TM7 Edelbrock with an adaptor. IIRC, two-tenths diff in ET(9.50 vs 9.70) IMO the runner length on that Team G was just way too short; you could see that to get the Dom pad they just cut into the runner length and shortened them. Now a more modern manifold would be another story...

Cab,I`m done racing for a while and need a dana first that way I don`t gernade the 8 3/4 and want to be established in Vegas better also. My car was chassis tuned w/the adapter but is was WAY out of the ballpark in terms of jetting and air bleeds which leads me to think I need a different/better fuel system. Thankxx for the offer though.

Dom, every engine is different. I had my Dominator on a 650 cammed 440 with an M1 and adapter. One of the best in this area, Dale Cubic, set it for that engine. I then put the same carb on my 650 roller cammed Hemi using a 4500 intake. I thought it ran great, until Carburator Joe from APD, as mentioned by Rickster, totally went through it again. After getting a baseline of 505 RWHP, I gave them the carb. Changing nothing but bolting on the new carb, I gained a real world 30 RWHP. Then Vic(DIscoQuik), fine-tuned it for the street. It idles @875, and still runs 10.80's. I'd listen to your carb guy, and let him "tinker" with it. $400 is the going rate, I believe, for quality work. PM AndyF. He's the resident tinkerer and knows what works. I think he tunes in his sleep..

It takes at least 750 HP RWHP to break any stock 8 3/4

Actually quick, I don`t want to get a "I told you so" ESPECIALLY from you. I know that`s true Cab about em being bullet proof but just in case the dana is a good investement.

yea but you have to build one that makes 750 hp first and then it has to make it off of the dyno
