I am putting a motor together and comp cam recommends that I use a break-in oil/additive to run in the motor for the first thirty minutes. I went to all the local stores Kragen/Oreily, AutoZone and Napa and no one sells the break-in additive.

What do I use as an alternative to break in oil?

Thanks,

Craig

No speed shops in the local area? There are lots of different break in oils and additives. Hard to believe you wouldn't be able to find any on the shelf at a local store. You used to be able to get a break in additive from Mopar as well as GM. I think the GM stuff is still available but the Mopar stuff might be disco.

I live in a small town in East Tennessee and the local Advance Auto stocks COMP Cams Break in additive as well as the local NAPA. But we also got good corn squeeze.

Any kind of Zinc additive is needed. Redline is one brand.

valvoline vr1 racing oil has zinc in it....should be available at your local parts store.

Valvoline VR1: Contains 75% higher zinc than SM motor oil with a balanced additive package designed to work in both racing and street-legal applications. This product will protect older style push-rod and flat tappet engines. Valvoline provides this product in both multi and mono viscosity grades: 20w50, straight 50, 10w30, straight 30, straight 40, and straight 60.

ok... I have called all over to find this with no luck I am going to use the race oil recommended. It is available at the local parts store.

One more question. Do I need to change the oil after the breakin or am I ok to just leave the race oil in the motor?

All I did was replace the lifter in the motor.

Thanks,

Valvoline does sell an oil that has the significant zinc level. The above oil is not it. Its as simple as this, if any oil has an API rating of SM, by regs it cant have more than a certain PPM of zinc. The oil that Valvoline sells that does have the zinc is marked "Not for street use" on it and does not have a API rating.

To the OP, did you coat the cam and lifters with lube? Are your inner valve springs pulled out, if applicable? Did you verify that you have lifter rotation? If yes to all 3, get Rotella 10-30 or 15-40. If you cant get the EOS (which GM renamed, and I cant remember the name) from a GM dealer, get a red bottle of STP and you should be good to go.

No Joe Gibb? Yes, change the oil after break in to flush out all the little particles.

(1) The (above mentioned) valvoline racing oil is considered a street oil . (2) & for sure lifter rotation

Im not sure what you are asking. The VR-1 available at most auto parts store has a API SM rating on it, hence no zinc.

The good Valvoline says "Not for street use", but in theory any oil without a API rating is not supposed to be used on the street.

Yes my wording was vague. OK so the VR-1 is an SM (street)oil (not high zinc) and there's another valvoline oil that IS high zinc? If I got it straight what is the hi zinc valvoline oil and the VR-1 says "not for street use" but is a racing oil but is not a high zinc oil?

coat the cam and lifters? YES
inner valve springs pulled out? N/A
lifter rotation? YES

I talked to the Napa guy today and he told me about the Rotella oil as well. Sounds like a pretty solid plan. He told me he used it successfully as well.

It's still called EOS and it's part # 88862586 and should be available at any GM dealer or Summit, Jegs etc.

This is the right VR1 for break in, and everyday use with high spring psi, not sure how many PPM of zinc it has but should be over the safe minimum of 1300ppm.
