hey guys/girls, i am going to pick up a 73 duster tommorow, and wanted all your opinions on it. it is a 73 340 auto car. the car is absolutly solid except for where the car was backed up in the ladies garage, the buildind was real close to the woods line and a little stream. so the whole car is completly rust free except for the rear end of the car. even the quarters are still almost perfect. the trunk floor is gone and it has a few holes on the back panel behind the bumper. so when i went to look at it, the gas tank was just laying on the ground. hokked up a bottle of gas to the thermaquad(i think) and she fired right up. the car is gold, but i plan on doing it over in tor-red. the interior is tan, so i am going to try to locate black interior. i am almost positive that it is the original engine. the guy says that if is not, i can have my money back. is 3,000 too much for a 73? or is it a deal? i looked for a build sheet......all of them are gone, but the car still has the fender tag the is perfect. the car does not have a 8 3/4, so would that mean that someone changed it? i have a 71 340 4-speed roller at my house right now, so will the fenders, hood w/ dual hood scoops, grill fit on the 73?

sounds high, if the interior was in great shape, and it had a 8 3/4 with a 4 speed maybe 3K. i would offer 1K.
this is what i do not understand. i know all of us mopar guys want everything for nothing, and give nothing for eveything, but i look through the classifieds on here and forabodiesonly, and to buy one from one of you mopar fanatics, they are high dollar. but to buy one, you are telling me that for 3,000 , it would have to be a 4-speed with 8 3/4......... come on guys, a 8 3/4 with a posi chunk is about 1,000.00 alone. and a four speed setup has to be about a easy 1,500.00 as a complete setup! so you are saying that the rear and 4-speed (that are 2,500.00 to buy) would be the only way that the car is worth 3,000.00? so i guess that a #'s matching 340 car is only worth 500.00 if it had no trans or rear?
i know that if any of you mopar heads had it for sale you would be saying " OH, NUMBERS MATCHING, I WANT 5,000.00 FOR IT, NOT A PENNY LESS" lol

then why did you ask for opinions?
i asked for a realistic opinion, not some crapshoot one. come on, a 73 340 4-speed with 8 3/4 posi and numbers matching would only be worth 3,000???????????????????????? i did not ask to be insulted. i know how it is. i have had alot of thses cars. we all want everyhting for nothing. we are typical mopar fans . lol someone wrote " if the interior was better.....". well, i never said that the interior was junk. i just said that it was tan, and i wanted black

YES YES a 73 340 with a 4 -speed and strong 8 3/4 would be worth 3K maybe 4K, but the car your looking at is a auto, probably not a console car correct? not bucket seats correct? open rear end correct? not sure if its a #'s match engine, are you sure its a 340? with the tank laying on the ground the frame rails are next in line to hit the driveway! Pay whatever you think its worth to you but for me 1k would be it. nice 73's with a nice paint job and 340/360 engines can be had for around 10K done.

Im definately not one of the experts but I'd say go for it if you like the car. If you spend 3k on the car, then spend 4k on metal work (I just threw that # out there) then you're into the car for 7k so far, and you KNOW what condition everything is in. Then you have to factor in paint, engine cost, etc... Pretty good IMHO if its a car that you plan to keep and drive the wheels off. Now if you're looking to have a goldmine to sell later, not so much. Plus I think theres more satisfaction to seeing your car come together than there is to just buy something thats already done. roe

try 1500
That's more what I was thinking. You can go higher if you want, but I would offer 15 and see what they say.
And 73 is the least desirable year of 340. Also 73 is the first year of the least desirable generation of nose for that car. Really 3k can get you a nice running/driving A body, not one you're running out of a gas bottle with shot trunk pan/rear frame.
If it was a 4-sp and a 8 3/4 car, then it could be worth 3k, however parts are worth a lot less when they come attached to a car versus selling them seperate. Just the way it is.
I would sooner hold my 3k for a better car. Like I said you can get a nice solid running/driving A body for that price, maybe not a 340 car, but big deal.

.....The 73 340 duster did not come with a 8 3/4. It came with a 8 1/4. .....
ding! ding! ding!
We have a winner!
By 73 A body's were big bolt(unless a drum brake car) and subsequently they were 8 1/4 rear ends. 7 1/4 if it was a more plain unit.
I owned a 73 duster as my driver from 87 to 93. It was my first car, so I was pretty into it back then. 8 1/4 321 ratio, all orig.
3K? Can't speculate really without being there to see, or a stack of pictures. Local market is really the biggest factor here too.
I've sold 440's, that internet guys told me were worth 300 dollars, for 1200, so who knows what stuff is worth where you are.
In all honesty, my first thought was that it seems a little high given the described rust, BUT an orignal, complete, running, 340 car, that really only needs tin work in the rear has got to be worth close to 3K
A clean running A body for 1500, easy to find. A clean running 340 A body for 1500, good luck.

correct, it is not a console car, no bucket seats open rear end. you hit it right on the head! lol i do not understand though. the frame rails literally have no rust, not even surface rust. and the trunk did not rot out near the frame rails luckily. i just got the numbers off of the engine, and it is a # matching

the value of any car is only what someone is willing to pay for it...
if it is worth 3k to you then.....
bought this 73 340 duster back in 2004 for about that price...

If you are new here, welcome to the site...........it is great, and you will get a lot from it. As mentioned above, it seemed that you already knew that you wanted the car, we are just offering our opinions for/against. It's ok on the Duster, in the long run you will probably make out fine, providing that you actually restore/finish it. Are you doing the work yourself? That would help offset the extra $$$......I know from my own experience that I sometimes pay more than they are worth, but in the long run I have never lost money. My '73 Roadrunner seemed high in 2004 at $1500.......it was a dry, rust free Oregon car. (see pic) Try finding one in that shape now, for that price! It's almost done, and since I did everything myself I'm sure that I made out well. My '68 Camaro SS 396 was only $1500 in 1990......guys at that time said I was nuts.........I KNOW I made out on that one, a true 396 car?? Please........a Superbee in the same shape as the Duster you are looking at.......$2500...........easy fix, new trunk, quarters...........an on and on..........the point is that if YOU feel it is a good buy, buy it........but do try to talk them down a little. That will not hurt! I believe time is on your side in this hobby, if you are a pack rat, like me. As time goes on, there are fewer and fewer unrestored musclecars, more and more rusty ones, and the prices are bound to go up on all examples. Just my
