My GTX has a problem with pre-detonation and I'm trying to take care of it. The 440 has stock replacement forged pistons and the stock 906's have been shaved (0.010" or 0.030" I forget).

I have been adding a quart of Octane Supreme to 10 gallons of fuel and that seemed to help but not take care of it. According to the info on Octane Supreme this mixture should raise my octane by 8.0 full points putting 92 premium at 100 octane, but I'm not sure how much I believe that.

Anyway, that costs $10 extra for a tank full. I just called our local distributor and I can get purple gas (110) for $11/gallon in a 55 gallon drum. If I mix 50/50 that would cost me an additional $30.00 over that of the Octane Supreme but I was hoping it would work better.

Long story longer...what octane does my car need and when you mix fuels do you just average the octane (50/50 of 92 and 110 is 101)???

What do you do?

Altitude is ~450'.

Currently has a Holley 750 DP with 73 in the front, 84 in the rear and 3.5 power valve (very little vacuum cam, MP 284/484).

I am thinking of changing the carb to a 770 Holley Advenger. I am having a hard time getting rid of a bog the car has and I could use the DP on my race car.

What are you running for timing? You can also try to back it off just a tish and see what happens.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Dizzy was redone by FBO. If memory serves it's ~15 initial and 35 total right now.

Need more info. Where does the detonation occur? Have you looked at your plugs?

Happens mostly with I give it mid-high throttle when I'm at speed (hitting it when passing at 60 mph).

I haven't checked the plugs in a while now. Last time I looked they were dry with a little dark carbon on them.

I'm hoping that 100 octane will do the trick, I would hate to run straight 110 but if I have to I will (assuming that is enough).

Auto or man tranny? If auto, does it kickdown? Rough RPM range where detonation begins?

And where's the bog you're trying to get rid of?

Any pinging is very damaging and must be stopped immediately. I'd empty the tank & add 5 gal of 100 & if no ping I'd then add 2&1/2 gal of pump gas, shake the trunk violently to mix it & repeat,& if no ping (you're at 50/50) continue to add a gal at a time, mix & repeat & doing the math keeping your tryouts brief as the amt used will skew your proportions. If it pings @ 50/50 go the other way. I would have your initial/total/springs/vac adv in the accepted norm for your eng (bb or sb) then give it as much octane as it requires to handle that amt of timing.EDIT if fact I would start w 100 & max your timing (those 4 parts IN ORDER) then start reducing the proportion. WOT on your hottest/driest day will require the max octane.

disconnect the vacuum advance and plug it. dont use it. you shouldnt ping with that cam and a stock motor with 93 octane. Unless you have a ton of carbon in the cylinders.

try knock any carbon out by using the old water in the carb trick

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

No vacuum advance, it's gone.
Stock motor with heads shaved a little.

Auto, it doesn't kick down as early as I like but does kick down.

No tach (tic toc isn't accurate with electonic ignition) but I'm guessing 2500-3000ish

Bog is off the line. I changed squirters and it got better but it's not right yet. The car will only spin the tires for ~30 feet.

Cam sounds retarded and the low power valve number is probably opening to late causing a lean ping!
