23T ...all of that considered ... I would agree - the mod is worth doing. But WHY didn't Ma-Mopar have all HP motors with a 1/2" PU ?
because HP motors didn't make 500+ horsepower.
If you are using a horsepower # for oil PU size needs ...OK then. B U T the HEMI did not make 500hp dead-stock ...so why have it there?

Good question, Doc....it just appears that they settled for adequate. Doesn't really make sense, can't imagine tooling cost would be any different for a 1/2" setup. And what Quick said got me to thinking, if I remember right the Max-wedge blocks only used a 3/8" pickup. My dad ran a Stage III wedge in a late-model modified back in the 60's, I remember having bearing problems on a semi-regular basis turning 6200-6400 rpm laps. Wasn't a lot of oil-system tech back then,at least in our neck of the woods, but when we changed over to the Hemi, don't recall that we ever spun a bearing even though we were turning 300-400 rpm higher with a lot heavier piston and rod than the wedge. Could it have been the 1/2" pickup? I don't know, but it's just something to think about.

Some pickup bosses are too thin to tap oversize, if the boss is sufficiently thick the reason to do this is because pumps are more efficient at pushing than they are at sucking; therefore, mods to increase the size of the suction side make sense.
You have to think of the suction side of the pump just like the intake side of the induction system.... its pressure(atmospheric pressure pushing it in). the pump creates the negative pressure zone, same as the piston does and everyone knows the work we do to the intakes on the heads

Doc said: just a deepened pan with a pickup that would "scare" most people here. It looked like someone heated and bend-up a piece of straight pipe and tacked on a screen. I've dones this a couple of times with a piece of black pipe straight from Home Depot, capped one end and filled with sand, then capped the other end, heated and bend to shape, took a couple of tries but the pipe is cheap. I did make an aluminum block for the screen section to increase the surface area, just a screen on the end of the pipe "is" a little scary... Great analogy, Mr. P.

One of the shop-made Ramcharger mods was a 1" ID inlet welded to the stock pump body...

Thanks - I can't find my picture, but the one I saw didn't look like that, different angle and point of entry.
