Is there a good way to degree a camshaft with the heads on the motor? I have a 484 purple cam in a 383. I bought it that way so I wanted to make sure it was right.

you'd need to replace 2 hyd lifters w solids to get an accurate read on your dial indicator on the end of the (2) pushrods

Why 2 solid lifters one on the intake lobe with a solid cup type push rod and if you want to degree the exhaust move it over.
Nice to have the intake off though

With iron heads you can use the magnet

I was wondering if you can get the crank in an accurate enough position without indicating off the piston directly. I did find true TDC and put degree tape on my balancer, but wasn't sure if that would be okay for cam degreeing.

Naw you have to make or buy a piston stop

I made 2 from a short and long reach spark plug
do before and after on compression or better with valve gear off so you don't get tangled in the valves

i think that threaded rod will bend.i used a grade 8 bolt.at 1" length it stopped my piston at 10BTDC with the tdc of the piston being .060 in the hole.

I bin using that one for 18 years never bent it yet???
It gets sandwiched between the piston and head how is it going to bend?

not to make a major case out of it the plug hole is at a 45*[guessing the angle]to the piston.i have a head off the block .if the plug linesup with the chamber roof i will agree with you.no big deal if it workds for you.cool!
