I have a 73 challenger. I installed a 3/8" sending unit/pickup and now when my gauge should read half it's close to empty. I figure if I had to I could reattactch my old sending unit. But honestly don't feel like getting covered in gas. Any tricks, can the gauge needle be pulled off and repositioned? Thanks very much everyone!

So you had a 5/16 sender that worked & you removed it.... Sorry but with as many posts as I've seen about sending unit issues & mt personal experiances... Obviously the problem is with the sender why change anything on the gauge to compensate...

bad ground on the sending unit???

It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.

Most of the new aftermarket ones are off some. Most need some adjusting also.I have a SS 3/8 one in my 65.Its off probally less than 1/8 of a tank.I did have to tweek the arm a bit on mine.Even from the factory some were not very accurate.Rocky

the unit body is grounded. And i know has 1/2 tank of gas in it. Old sending unit read 33 ohms near half, new unit in tank reads 33 ohms, but gauge is just above e. spikes to full when i ground the wire. The gauge worked fine before i replaced it, guess i have to pull the new one out and run ut through the scale. I just thought 33 ohms would show alot more than just above e.

Sounds like your sending unit ground is bad...

Check that first.

The proper way to check it is what Snoopy posted. Good post.

Check it with a known good ohm meter before putting it into the tank. If you can't get those readings by bending the float arm or stop, then return it and get another sending unit.

The gauge in the dash has never been off on the cars I've worked on.

My car is not at my house so i'll check it again in a couple days. I'll try running a better ground to my sending unit body, then pull it out if that doesn't work. It's just weird, 33 ohms should be nearly half on my gauge, sure acts like a bad ground though. maybe i'll run a temporary jumper ground to my battery - terminal in the trunk.

Is the float arm adjusted correctly? Sometimes you have to bend then to the correct level. Sounds like the arm needs to be bent down some to lower the float. That will cause it to rise up more.
