Hi, Has anyone used a factory dual snorkel air cleaner with a 383 performer RPM intake on a 70 Cuda. I would like to retain the factory air cleaner. So I dont want to purchase the intake and find the hood wont shut? Thanks Tim

Measure your clearance now. IIRC you will need another 1.75" for that intake.

The motor is out of the car and unassembled at this point, just want to see if I can go this way with the intake.

I don't think it will fit if you have the flat hood.
I have a '70 Barracuda with a flat hood & 383 & from the measurements I've taken it wont fit with the factory air cleaner.

i know you said 383, we have the RPM on a SB A body, stock hood and stock unsilenced air cleaner, no hood issues here.

Your challenger has a bulge hood, right?

My Cuda has the hood with the dual scoops but I dont know if it offers any more clearance than the flat hood!

I know with a 440 there is absolutely no chance it would clear with a stock air cleaner, but I can't say I've ever tried with a 383

It'll be close for sure

I have a 71 with the RPM, dual scoop hood and a factory dual cone air cleaner. The air cleaner, though, is off a later unknown Mopar, but it fits perfect and the hood clears. The cones line right up with each scoop.

Sounds promising, would it be possible to post a picture of your setup?

I did this on a 71 Challenger with a bulge hood, and it was fine.

My

The air filter element I use in the factory '70 twin snorkel air cleaner is a -
K&N E-1530 12 1/2" x 2 3/4"
On testing under load I found there was a restriction of 2.8" of water through the twin snorkel housing & another 1.6" h20 over the K&N E-1530 element so I got an element 3/4" taller ( K&N E-1540) so there would be less restriction over the filter & a 3/4" opening around the lid to let in more air. The taller element wouldn't help your height problem at all but you should at least run the stock height K&N element &/or cut holes or a slot around the base or back of the filter housing to get some more air in, the snorkels are too small even for my low comp 383 @ 5200rpm so they would choke anything bigger!

Check out this link, it contains all you need to know about Mopar air cleaners, you will see the factory openings to get more air in & at the bottom of the page it shows 340 & 440 aircleaners have more of a dropped base than the 383 & 400 units.
