Picked up a truck load of small block parts this weekend. An R1 48 degree block being 1 of the items. The block is a dry sump block but has a wet sump main on it. Can the block be converted to a wet sump block, by drilling the passage to the oil filter area and running a remote filter? Thanks Brian W.

I can't answer for you 100% but, I'd check all the passages.
If it was a dry-sump engine, there's no reason for any of the
passages at the rear of the block......except oil pressure port.

Basically, it had pick-ups in the pan routed to the scavenge
stages of the pump, to a dry-sump tank, then to the pressure
stage pumped the oil, under pressure through a filter then to
the priority main feed. (to the passenger side of the timing
cover, adjacent to #2 cylinder)

You could also run a single-stage external pump. One pick-up in
the pan, through a filter, then to the priority main feed.

Yes, I have a CNC program that machines the oil passage through the block, but have done several by hand before. I have an old drill fixture around here somewhere that I had made to drill them out before we did the CNC deal.

Also your #5 cap may not be registered correctly for snout of oil pump, it's no big deal to machine that as well, have done a bunch of them.

That block more than likely is 9" deck.
