has anyone had any luck getting small scratches out of glass, i have some scratches on the rear quarter glass of my 68'dodge coronet, i have been pondering over this for about a few weeks, has my complete restoration on hold, the question is should i try to find a good used glass and replace or get the kit from eastwood and try to get the scratch out? i have never taken the glass out and do not know where to start. however i do have the car apart and everything is easily accessible now,

You can polish out some defects but that is rather severe..

well, i don't really need it perfect, however. i do have about 20,000 invested now and do not have the paint done yet, i am at the point in the restoration where i am really tired of spending money, i know all of you have got to this point, i guess i may have to bite the bullet, i knew new glass the only way, i was hoping maybe to get it to look good enough without taking everything apart, i did not want new glass on 1 area and old glass on the other, i do have new windshield,

It will only cost a couple bucks to
try and buff those out, if you don't
like how it turns out then you can
shop for nicer glass.
Try it first.

FWIW I've never been one of those who is super anal about the glass, on my car it's rolled down 95+% of the time... It needs to keep the weather out.... I'd find a better used piece of glass & accept it.. The picture I posted about was me polishing the glass in my vert... It was decent & once I polished only showed a couple minor ghost scratches... But that piece of glass you took a photo of has enough damage it would never look right...

I bought the Eastwood kit and have used it with little success. Rule of if you can feel it with your fingernail, it aint comming out.

Ask the question," what am I going to do with my car"?? My car has some scratches in the glass and doesn't have a top on the vert frame yet... I think the only time a window was rolled up was the drivers side, at night, when a woman complained about being cold.....

I ended up using some parts that were not perfect to finish my car as I got tired of just looking at it and tired of spending ALOT of money on it, but not driving it.. All of them can be removed and replaced or refinished at a later date or during the winter when the car is taking its winter "nap"....

I've done some research on this and found that any of the one step polishes are useless.
Removing scratches can be done but it takes multiple steps just like wetsanding your paint.
There is a place in Ireland http://www.glasspolish.ie/ that sells multi-step kits, I'm going to try one out this summer.

get a nice replacement glass. Don't mess with the eastwood kit. I bought the eastwood kit and it does get out sctraches out but when you're done the window looks like a lexan window. lots of glare when in the sun. if you can feel the scratch at all with you're finger nail replace it. if you can't try polishing it before buying different glass.

Can they be polished out without a distortion?? I have heard bad things about it not looking right afterwards..

1972 Road Runner / GTX 440 4spd Dana 3.54 Just about to turn 26K original miles..

A boat, a GMC truck, some Craftsman Tools, LOTS of Zombie Protection, and a few Goldfish..

If you love someone set them free..
If they come back it means nobody else wanted them either..!!

If you have a deep scratch & try to buff it out by concentrating your effort on the scratched area you'll distrort it... Same as a paint job... You need to work the whole piece of glass.. Which is why they say you can't fix a deeply scratched piece of glass.. In reality you can but it would take days to do it & the likelyhood of not causing a distorted area would be pretty slim...

I did all the side glass in my vert, none were bad but I was able to take them from decent to very nice with a couple hours work... Same as paint, don't get the buffing pad on edge, keep it flat & keep it moving... Make sure the glass is clean cause any sandy residue will cause more harm than any good the Cerium Oxide will do... They tell you to run the buffing pad with a drill but I used my buffer.. If you just thread it on & don't pay attention the pad will fall apart because the shaft on the buffer is to long & winds up pressing on the buffing pad forcing it to seperate from the backing... I found that putting a couple tablespoons of Cerium oxide on the glass then using water in the spray bottle allowed me good control of the product.. As you buff stop occassionally & re-wet the abrasive or it will clump & can cause scratches... When you think your done polishing don't wipe the abrasive off, use a hose & flush the abrasive with plenty of water... Dry the glass & inspect... I spent 15-20 minutes per side & the glass really cleaned up allot..

Thats the kit I'm planning to try, BTW their main website in the UK mentions that their products are available in the US linky
There appear to be a number of places (that's one of them) that offer a service to polish out even deep scratches on, for example, storefront glass etc where replacement would be very expensive....ergo - deep scratches can be removed from glass, I believe the trick is to avoid excessive distortion though.
These use a special 3M abrasive paper designed for hard surfaces - to quote their website "3Ms unique Trizact Glass Abrasive are the only abrasive easy and safe enough to use on all types of glass". Worth a go though they are not exactly giving the stuff away....

If your glass is mainly waterspotted and/or very lightly scratched, use some Bon ami on it.. Wet it down and polish away........

i just went outside and the scratch is probaly worst than i thought, you can catch the scratch with your fingernail, so i guess the glass is toast, so can somebody please tell me how to get the glass out, i have never taken glass out of my car, can i just take the glass out without taking all the internals out? or do you have to take the whole thing apart?

To remove your glass you will find two small bolts attach the window to the regulator... Before you try removing the bolts spray them with the penatrating oil of your choice, tap them with what ever you can access them with & wait a few hours to let the oil work... Those bolts always break..

You may hear pros and cons against using 0000 Steel Wool and water on the (scratched areas), but personally I have only had good results using this procedure. However, I do believe that it all boils down to how you do it.
I would limit the procedure to only the scratched areas, using a circular motion and not applying (too) much pressure...experimenting as you go.

I've repaired a lot of scratches in my auto glass over the years. Just don't get gung-ho about it, take your time and test it gradually, and be sure to use (0000). Nothing less.

Good luck

This is how I use it...
1.) Take (0000) steel wool and a small cup of water.
Wet the area of the major scratches or dip the steel wool in the water and start smoothing out the scratches on the glass in small circular motions (about the size of a dime or a quarter....

2.) Stay in one area for at least 1 minute constantly applying pressure in the same spot.
Wipe the area clean with a dry rag and check the progress. The amount of pressure you apply will be different on each application and should be monitored from time to time based on the results.

This will not make badly scratched glass appear band new, but it will (totally) remove a lot of the small scratches and (partially) remove many of the bad ones.

By lookin at your pictures, you should notice an immediate improvement after 5 minutes.

Good Luck

Remember, if you don't see the results you want, apply a little more pressure....
