ever use a block that had a heli-coiled head bolt hole? this is a mild race application, and i told the guy that i think it's a deal breaker. what do you guys think?

i found one and stopped. it was going to be a head swap, which i advised against because we knew absolutely nothing about the engine, other than it didn't run as strong as it should have. my friend pulled the heads and found domed pistons! and standard bore. i took a look at it this morning, and the pistons are almost .060 in the hole, so i measured the volume one inch down, and the domes had a net volume of zero because the pistons are so far down. i hate field work.

I don't see why you wouldn't use it if it was installed properly. Anything we build at work that is getting shot into space and/or is MIL-SPEC gets helicoils if the part is made of Aluminum. If they're tough enough to be launched into space, or dropped out of a C-130 that's doing a touch and go in the desert, it should be fine in cast iron ...

Not a thing wrong with a helicoil if done correctly. Just like sleeving is probably as or better after than before.

Bring a headbolt and square and make sure that they put it in straight. Plenty of guys have messed up a DIY helicoil installation and put the coil in off angle. I have seen them so bad that you can't get the head bolt threaded once the head is on the block without it cross threading. Or if it is studded, you cant get the head on.
