Went to Tucson today with my mom for a Dr Appt. Had earlier this past weekend responded to an ad for a SB 727. Guy claims it was yanked out of a 74 Road Runner 360 car.

I met up with the guy and followed him about 30 miles to his house out in the middle of nowhere. There was the tranny, along with what looked like a 73 or 74 RR that looks like it had exploded, parts everywhere.

The guy told me on the phone that the converter came with the tranny, but this mustve been a different guy I was talking to now. There was no converter and the guy claims the tranny had been sitting outside for 3 months but was functional when they pulled it.

So what can anyone tell me from the numbers where the pan seals up?

Look at the crossmember...Sure dont look like a Car crossmember to me.

Whats with the drilled hole and 3 lines in the bellhousing,is that a rebuilders signature or
what?

This is a 727...Correct?

So last question, asking price was $100,I drove away with it in my trunk for $75. Good deal or Bad deal?

The cross member is out of a B series van and the hole is for setting timming in the vans.

Here's the link from the archives.

IIRC all the van/truck trans had a 4 gear planetary.

you didn't show enough to prove it is a 727 at least for me. Pan area.

The hole was mentioned in a post about transmissions and I recall it is from an RV. So it would be a BB then?

Cool Wild Bill,Thanks for the numbers. Im having trouble locating the one on my tranny in the ones you provided.

I have found the following in that list:

3736139..........318/360......727..........truck, medium

*3736145..........318/360......727..........truck, short

*3736147..........318/360......727..........truck, long(heavy duty)

So wheres my number? Is it true what the seller states that my Tranny is a 1974?

So what does the whole 4 gear planetary mean?

Yes, 727 from a van. For 75 dollars you got a very good deal. A engine 727s are harder to come by than Big Block ones around here.

A more complete list of numbers

Standard car trans have a 3 gear planetary. Some, Myself included, beleive the 4 pinion planatary is stronger then the 3.

I have a van trans in my race car now.

Yep its a 727,Look at the pan.I know I should have checked that before I bought it,but I remember the pan"kicking out" on the dipstick side,so I was pretty sure this was a 727.

Now the critical question.I bought this to have rebuilt and put in my 72 Fury Wagon. Will all the linkages and kickdown stuff bolt right up to this,or am I gonna have to tweak stuff here and there?

Is your car a column shift or console/floor.

Column shifts require the tabs on the bell housing (drives side) floor shift cars require the tabs that are on the tail shaft housing just below the speedo gear hole.
