That would be a great idea, but I don't think it would be very long before Moparts heard from Chrysler LLC, telling them to cease and desist from using Mopar licensed property. Mopar Performance does not want these things to still be available.

For that matter, there are any number of reputable engine builders who have built engines with ported LA heads. So why aren't they creating templates and selling them? Probably the same reason MP/DC discontinued them, you can buy newer, better flowing heads for close to the same cost of rebuilding and porting a set of old iron dogs.

I'd have to dig up some old catalogs and look at the the numbers, but I seem to recall that stock Magnum R/T heads would outflow a set of ported LA heads right out of the box.

Thats probably all true.

But when I built my magnum, new head castings were $85 each and the template kit was $20.

With the same cam and intake as the 380 crate motor, I blew its doors off for less money starting with an MP short block for $1250.

I know there are templates available for big block heads, but are there any for the small block? I want to do some porting on my 360 heads, but have never done it before.

I just found the set I used on my 360 "LA" series heads about 8 or 9 years ago & are MP P4876412 "Swirl Port Heads"

PM me if anyone wants a photocopy of the instructions & templates.

Man that was alot of work.

If your going to photocopy, use a color copier (in black/white mode). I've found that the imaging drum from a color copier is more accurate then a typical B/W copier. Also, a simple photocopy cannot be used as a working template. It needs to be rigid. I recommend a plain bond paper, encapsulated/laminated in 20 mil thickness. Do not use cardstock; it will only break apart.

I used this method 7-8 years ago with the BB templates and it works very well. I still have the original kit intact, and worked off the the repro's I made.
I don't sell these; they are/were DCC's propriety.

I bought the apparent LAST available SB "308" template kit, out of Texas, IIRC, late spring 2006. I decided not to use it for the 360 project I was doing, but lost the template kit! Actually I don't think I lost it, it just grew legs and walked away. It's gotta be around here somewhere

Just remember when photocoping, the imaging drum will stretch the final copy, so chose your copier carefully. Your water jackets will thank you.

Death or Glory...it's just another story.

Bummer they are gone.

Here's what they looked like. Unlike the big block ones, they were pre-cut. Sorry, I don't have any left, just a picture.

Well, that certainly is a bummer.

I'm still planning on porting my small block heads. Any decent references on how to do a light port job? I just want to clean up the intake ports, chambers, and polish up the exhaust ports. I'm not looking for extreme air flow, but at least a basic improvement over stock.

didn't they leave the big block ones like that in case one decided to use the 2.14/1.81 valves?

Man, that is just what I could use. Is that the best picture you got? Can you send me the original 1:1 picture? My sis does professional drafting and can probably dimension these and get a very close full size hard copy. all I need to know is one critical dimension. How do they work? Looks like you put these in your valve guide and grind to make them flush fit into the port, and then go on to the next orientation? Too bad they are no longer in production. So are 308 castings better than 360's for a .284/484 type cam? I can get a pair cheap, but already have some late 360 LA style heads.

The 308 heads are marginally better in STOCK form than the early heads. Now for the bad news, they are cracked or will shortly,so do you want to put the time and effort into them? I port my own so if I have a head crack it's not a big loss.Same goes for spending $$$ on the magnum heads,I'm not suggesting that a good valve job and minor porting won't help them. As far as the MP porting templates,I own a set for the magnum heads, funny how well they fit the stock magnum R/T heads.

I have the 587 castings that i want to use on a 408 stroker, are they worth porting or just clean them up and call it good?

They are worth porting if you want to make HP. The problem is the cost to have someone do the porting, valves, valve guides, valve job, milling, etc. Most will buy a set of edelbrocks due to the $$$ to get the factory stuff to come around.

I sold a few sets of magnum templates here and still might have a couple left but not ready to sell off anymore at this point. I did try to scan a set for a member but after spending 4 or 5 hours the scale was still off after printing so I gave up.
