Thanks,
John

How fast are you going? 9.99 and quicker requires a full face helmet.

Thanks for the input Bill, I have no idea how fast yet, but I'm pretty sure it will or SHOULD go better than 9.99. I will be mostly 1/8th mile TnT for awhile, atleast til I can get off this crazy weekend shift...

let me ask you, if you ever need to use the helmet do you want to just protect the back of your head or all of it? Buy a full face your safety is worth the inconvenience. Helmet City usually has some of the best pricing. The best time to buy is at the US Nationals every labor day, Simpson and Impact both have huge sales.

If you want to try on some before you actually buy 1, go to a MC dealer, and try them on for comfort, and sizing.

Point well taken...wasnt asking to comprimise saftey...thanks for the input. It will be a learning experience, I've never used a full face before.

another thing to remember, M rated helmets are motorcycle, SA is auto racing. Different test criteria. I can't say if a motorcycle helmet is less safe but those are the test certs. Buy the best one you can afford. My last was a Simpson super bandit, current is an Impact Champ and visibility is fine I can still see fine even with a FC cage. You will get used to it.

If I'm not mistaken the M class rating is not sufficiant to pass tech.

I believe it needs to be SA or snell rated.

THIS is what po's me! I have helmets laying everywhere from years gone by and rule changes,,,etc! I still have the same head,,it probably isn't worth as much as it used to be,,so why do I need another/better helmet every few years? Do the helmets rot, deteriate, get soft,??WTH? I believe the government and the sanctioning bodies are both the same dumb asses!

helmets are rated and tested by the Snell Foundation. I'm sure if you call or email them you they will answer your questions unlike the other for our "safety" organization.

http://www.smf.org/

Why should you replace your helmet every five years?
The five year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both the helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production over can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.

Same here, I always use M2005 helmets off Ebay for around $75 and always pass tech. I use it cuz it's all I can afford for now. Get a better one if you can afford it.

Doug, I thought we already went over this?
Both of my helmets are Impact, the gray one is the "Draft" and I wear it in the dragster. It is a fantastic open cockpit helmet but not good for doorcar. The "duck bill" limits downward movement with a neckbrace on. The carbon fiber helmet is a "Super Sport" and is a great door car helmet. It does not have some of the design options of the draft but has the same LARGE eyeport that I desire for racing.

It was the carbon fiber that threw me off ,,,i recall the super sport model,,,but only see it listed on jegs, summit,,and even the helmet link on page one of this thread in black, white, grey, and flat,,,no carbon fiber,,so i thought it was a different model..

I found the actual impact website,,and see they list the carbon fiber there...was hoping to get it "cheaper" thru jegs/summit/etc,,,

thanks again,
Doug

Doug, call Jeg's and get a price using the racer discount program. All you need is the part # when you call. Got a great deal on my Draft with Jegs. Bought the carbon helmet from SST motorsports in Georgia. It was $900 included shipping and two visors.

I never close visor completely and big exhale before going in. That just to prevent fogging. Breathing is no problem at all.
